Lisa's Steampunk Card

Hello, Lisa Hoel here. Sometimes it's hard to come up with ideas for masculine cards or gifts but we'll have plenty of inspiration for you with our current Funkie Junkie theme, "Hats Off to Our Men". The challenge was to celebrate the men in our life with a card or gift. I decided to go with a card:

You can't go wrong with steampunk!

This was a fun card to put together and it gave me a chance to play more with Distress Watercolor Pencils.

First I stamped the background of Mixed Media Heavystock with a grid of stamps from the Creative Blocks set in Hickory Smoke Archival Ink. Leaving the stamped paper in place on my stamping platform, I colored the stamped details with the pencils and then blended them out with a brush.

After the paint was dry, I re-stamped over the top of it all with more Hickory Smoke Archival Ink. This brought back the detail of the stamped images.

I also used the pencils to color the Paper Dolls Portraits ephemera piece. (Distress Crayons work pretty well too.)

Teri's Masculine Masterboard

Hello! It's Teri from TerisMailbox posting for The Funkie Junkie Boutique. Today I am sharing how I morphed an 8.5 x 11 inch Masterboard into four masculine cards!

I always need manly cards and this was a great way to create multiple cards!

Start by creating a background using Stormy Skies, Faded Jeans and Speckled Egg Distress Oxide Inks. Apply randomly to an 8.5 x 11 inch piece of Heavyweight Cardstock.

Add a few splatters using Fade Jeans Spray Stain.

I had a lot of fun using multiple Stampers Anonymous stamps for this project.

I found that Oxide Inks worked much better for this technique.

Too much fun going from the inked board to this using multiple sets! I will share deets for each of the four quarters! I did lightly draw a pencil line to identify where the A2 cuts would be made prior to stamping the images. 

I am sure you recognize The Inspector. All of the images were stamped with Archival Inks. Barn Door Archival Ink was perfect for the cent sign and the tickets. 

You'll have to check out the video to see how I improved this one. I originally embossed the sentiment on the card but decided that it didn't stand out enough so I used my Deckle Edge Trimmer to create a Vellum banner and embossed the sentiment to add to the top! Tim's small stapler was perfect to attach the banner.

I always love the Ideology paper dolls with dogs. This was the perfect image for this card front! The sentiment is heat embossed. I also used texture paste and Stencils to add the gears on the left side.

And finally we have the children....

I thought these children looked formal and make a great addition to this card. The Wander label adds just the right touch!

Janna's Hats Off to Our Men

Hello and welcome to this week‘s TFJB Inspiration Ave blog. Our theme this week is “Hats off to Our Men”. Here I have decided to create a grungy steampunk birthday card.

Supplies used for this grungy birthday card include: Idea-ology phemera. Sizzix 3D embossing folder Typewriter, Distress Black Heavystock, Sizzix Alpha Numeric Theory, Distress Crayons Black Soot, Crushed Olive, Cracked Pistachio, and Salvaged Patina, Distress Mica Spray Stains Holly Branch and Decayed, Distress Watercolor Pencils Lumberjack Plaid, Prize Ribbon, Vintage Photo, Scorched Timber, and Tattered Rose, Collage Medium, DecorativeTape, and Metalic Cardstock.

For this card I wanted to go the grungy route. I started with a foundation of distress black heavy stock and the Sizzix 3D embossing folder typewriter.

To alter the cardstock, I will be using Distress Mica Spray Stains Decayed and Holly Branch as well as Distress Crayons Black Soot, Cracked Pistachio, Crushed Olive, and Salvaged Patina.

To start I spritzed the cardstock with the distress sprayer and added Distress Mica Spray Stains Decayed and Holly Branch. I then spritzed the cardstock several more times to get the pigments moving before drying the cardstock with the Ranger heat tool.

Below is the dried cardstock with mica spray stains.

Next to add a layer of grunge I smudged Distress Crayons to highlight the lows and highs of the folder. I started with Black Soot to darken up some of the letters. Then I added Crushed Olive, Salvaged Patina, and Cracked Pistachio. I smudged the Distress Crayon with my fingers.

For the main focal point I decided to feature an Idea-ology Paper Dolls I decided to alter this with some Distress Watercolor Pencils. The colors I used include Prize Ribbon, Tattered Rose, Vintage Photo, and Scored Timber. I colored the Paper Doll and then blended to color out with the Ranger Distress Watercolor Brush.

Below are the are finished watercolor results.

To put the card all together I decided to do a bit of collage with Idea-ology Ephemera. I picked neutral pieces and included a dial to add a steampunk vibe to the card.

To finish off the background of the card I added some decorative washi tape to the edges of the card.

For the sentiment I die cut Happy B-day using the Sizzix alpha numeric theory. I then die cut the letters out of Idea-ology metallic cardstock. Before die cutting I added some double sided stick tape to the cardstock.

Lyla's Tiny Scrapbook

Hello! Lyla here, starting off the latest theme for The Funkie Junkie Boutique that will be posting for the next two weeks. Owner Linda Coughlin has the Design Team creating something for the guys with "Hats Off to Our Men,"! Since I've had this project in mind for some time, parts of it were already cut out, but I found myself changing my mind at the last minute, of course. and re-designing my idea as I went. Come along with me and see how I crafted this Tag to become a Tribute to "EMERGENCY!"

You can see from this first picture; I already had the die cuts and (Sizzix) Shaker Domes for the television set ready (TH Bigz Alterations Die Retro TV- retired?), as well as brown paper wrap (packaging wrap from TFJB Happy Mail) already cut and stacked, ready to become a miniature scrapbook.

I used regular kitchen foil onto cardstock for the 3D Foundry Folder, and a couple sheets of Backdrops Vol. 5 for the Brickwork & Mechanics 3D Folders all inked with either Black Soot or Ground Espresso Oxides.

Then adhered each of the embossed Backdrops to all the Etcetera pieces and cut them out before sanding down all the edges.

I distressed all the "metal" pieces with Black Soot Distress Paint using

a regular paint brush, then wiping with a paper towel- keeping the crevices with paint.

Finally: that Lost Shadow Distress Crayon! Using this shade helped keep everything from being too dark. I made sure to edge every piece, then heat dry before inking all the corners for age.

I printed out a color photo and a black and white, inking up the B&W pic with some Distress Black Soot Oxide (and heat drying it first) then covering both with some clear contact paper. This keeps the photos from getting smeared while I work.

I used some leftover pieces of Backdrops Vol 5 to make covers for the miniature scrapbook.  A simple 2& 1/2 inches wide by 2 inches long- same as the stacked paper wrap. After gluing the edges down, another scrap went on top of the end folds (the folds would face the inside pages on both ends) to add some stiffness to the covers. Putting the stack of wrap papers in between the 2 covers, I used hemp string to make a simple wrap-through tie to hold the book together. Inking with Oxides in Vintage Photo and Ground Espresso, heat dry, then adding some odd leftover Remnant Rubs to make a title on the front cover.

I needed some paper photos to add to the miniature scrapbook; basically, just like what I had growing up!(I also had the Squad 51 Dodge truck, both Johnny and Roy dolls, with all the accessories, the EMERGENCY board game,  and an EMERGENCY! red helmet. I was all in!)

And a lot of cutting out and gluing- just like a normal-sized scrapbook.

To make the TV- I already had all the basic cuts and had used the TH Lumber 3D Embossing Folder on all the pieces- with Ground Espresso which seeped into the cracks, then heat dried them... and had packed them all away for what ended up being two years! I had been hoping to use them for the 50th Anniversary in 2022, but 52 is still a good number, too! To make the TV thinner- I simply scored the pieces that connect the front and back TV cuts thinner, and cut the V marks where I wanted them to fold- to make a folder or the mini-Scrapbook to hide inside.

The piece on the right is just the same "box" but smaller. It went into the far end of the larger box- to use as a 'stopper' so the scrapbook wouldn't slide too far inside.

Now, it was time to use that NEW TH SCORCHED LUMBER! Perfectly matched name for use on this project!

And this is what I ended up with... A Tribute to "EMERGENCY!" one of my most favorite shows- ever!
