Saturday Step X Step - altered mountboard hanging

Well it is Trace here with a Saturday Step X Step and for today's I have surprised myself and probably everyone else by using some very un-me colours ...so here goes:

I started by applying picket fence distress paint through one of Linda's new Prima stencils...this one is gorgeous...

Now the stencil is not long enough to cover the whole tag , so I applied the paint using some cut n dry foam to the top part of the tag , removed the stencil and dried then placed on bottom half and repeated, now for some colour...I selected spun sugar (see told it is was un-me colours!), shabby shutters and tumbled glass distress stains. I applied to the tag dry then spritzed with water ...dried and added more stain and water until happy.

I then scribbled some stains onto my craft sheet and created a background onto my larger piece of mount board...(don't worry this is only the base layer it gets prettier honest!)

I repeated until happy and then added the same distress inks around the edge and over areas of the stains to enrich their colours. I then spritzed some water onto my hand and flicked onto surface, left for a few seconds and blotted off. Make sure you heat dry at this point to make sure it is dry...so then your stamping won't run in a minute.

So here are the base layers ready for stamping and embellishing...firstly I placed the same stencil back over areas of the background piece of mount board and applied some tumbled glass distress ink ...it is all about building up the layers..so it doesn't look too great at first!

Then I added some stamping using a small stamp and shabby shutters distress ink.

Finally I added some stamping using part of a larger stamp , inked in Victorian velvet. when using a large stamp you can use unmounted and roll across the background ..therefore only using part of the stamp...giving a much more random effect.

Now for the details...I made some flowers cut from Linda's crinoline and dyed with tumbled glass stain..I used 3 layers for each flower ( if you don't like the blue fingered look you may want to use gloves...me I am okay with the blue!)

I spritzed with water and dipped into stain on sheet.

I then heat dried and tried to keep scrunching them..hence the blue fingers!

Now for the layering up ...here is the finished piece....

(about as un-me as I could do I think!?) so I layered my tag onto my mount board base. then added lots of the new Tim foliage dipped into shabby shutters... The crinoline flowers were secured with a brad found in my stash...

For the focal point I added this lovely quote from artistic outpost stamped in archival ink.

I added lots of pink ish flowres using a piece of card dipped into Victorian velvet and spun sugar distress stains and cut using tattered floral strip die..

Finally some of the gorgeous seam binding dyed by Linda..that comes in lots of her yummy parcels from the boutique!

Well if you made it to the end I think you deserve a cuppa!
Keep those fingers inky!

Friday Focus - Inks

Hi everyone and welcome. It's Friday Focus time, and this week it's the turn of inks to be put under the spotlight. Let's face it, very little can be done without these and if (like me) you've been building your collection slowly over time then this is definitely the week to fill those gaps; with an extra 15% off these already competitively priced items (individual in-stock ink pads and reinkers - does not apply to pre-orders) at The Funkie Junkie Boutique you'd be hard pushed to find a better deal in cyberspace!

Linda asked me to concentrate my efforts on Wendy Vecchi Archival Inks and Distress Inks - who can refuse an offer like that! Anyone who follows my blog regularly knows I've been just a little excited by the way Wendy has used Archival Reinkers to create amazing backgrounds (here is her Ranger VIDEO DEMONSTRATION from Winter 2014 CHA). So you've given it a whirl and got your background, but where do you go from there? Here's how I created this card;

Start with your inky background. Trim off the parts you are unhappy with (if there are any!)

I sit my background on a card blank to work out where to put it and layer die cuts on to figure out the basis of a design. In this case I went for white and vellum foliage pieces, but if you have a stash of die cuts now's the time to play and see what works for you.

I stick with similar colours to create other embellishments. Stamping the flowers in Archival Ink means I can play with Distress Ink and water without fear of losing the image. To finish these white gel pen dots were added to the centre before they were coated in clear embossing powder.

You can use Distress Inks or Archival Inks through your stencils and on your stamps. Make sure you dry each layer thoroughly to allow the Specialty stamping paper to 'lock in' the colours. By doing this you also prevent the ink bleeding into your white embossing paste (stencilled on top of the stamping).

Having stuck a couple of the base die cuts in place, I created another layer by stamping the dot background onto white card with the Red Geranium Archival Ink. Having cut around the edge I also cut through the middle of this background to allow it to be 'extended' as a rectangular shape behind the top layer.

To add a little extra detail I splattered on a few dots of White Linen Dylusions spray. Finally the remaining die cuts, glossy flowers, net roses, stamped sentiment strip and some of those divine pieces of dyed seam binding you get when you order embellishments from The Funkie Junkie Boutique were added.

And here's a few close ups to show you the finished card in more detail.

Combining all these different textures makes such a difference to the completed design.

Hope that has given you a few ideas for creating your own cards from these amazing Archival Ink backgrounds. The products used are listed below, and don't forget, those inks have an extra 15% discount for this coming week over at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. Enjoy!

Take care of yourselves,
Jenny xxx

Challenge Winners - The Warmth of Winter

Welcome to the Frilly and Funkie challenge blog for the start of a new week, and it's time to announce the winners of  'The Warmth of Winter' challenge. As ever, thank you so much to everyone who took the time to enter. There were some gorgeous, heart-warming entries for this one and it was a closely run vote by the Design Team. In the end the highest number of votes went to this super entry by #3 Jennie.

Jennie wanted to send a message of support to a friend in need, and took inspiration from a special time spent in Paris her friend to create this wonderful card. We have no doubt her friend's spirits will have been lifted on receiving this. Congratulations Jennie on being our favourite for 'The Warmth of Winter' challenge and winning the opportunity to be a Guest Designer here at Frilly and Funkie for a future challenge.

And Random.org has chosen a winner for our $25 gift certificate to The Funkie Junkie Boutique. Our congratulations go to #29 Stacy.

Unfortunately there were entries to the last challenge that exceeded our entry limit of 10 challenges (including ours) and these could not be considered for the draw. It is always so disappointing to see some fantastic work discounted for this reason, so please remember to follow the rules carefully in future.

A huge thanks from the Frilly and Funkie team to everyone who took part in this challenge and congratulations again to our winners. Please email Linda at thefunkiejunkie@gmail.com for the codes for the winner's badge and to give us your email address for the Guest Designer details (Jennie) and for the gift certificate details (Stacy).

Our current challenge, 'Valentine's Day - with a twist', runs through Tuesday, February 11th. We hope to see you entering this time around so that you too can be in with a chance to win. And remember, you can enter up to 10 challenges including ours, and a maximum of 3 entries per person to our challenge. Please remember to link back to our challenge in your entry and mention in your post that you are entering this Frilly and Funkie challenge.

Have a great week!

3 tags - Step x Step

Hello, it's Sue here and today I'm sharing a 3 tag project with you. I wasn't really sure where I was going when I started this, I just had a vague design in my head, which is very often the case !

So, I started with two of the jumbo tags that linda sells in the Funkie Junkie Boutique and cut one of them down to a smaller tag using the Tim Holtz die. The very tiny tag is from my stash.

I then took the largest tag and painted it with arcylic paint then used the Wendy Vecchi Vintage Mesh background stamp and stamped without an acrylic block using pale blue acrylic paint.

I stencilled some dots using the Wendy Vecchi Polka Dotty stencil with blue acrylic paint and when the paint was dry I replaced the stencil but off set it slightly and then stencilled over the top with a pale pink acrylic paint. The result is that a shadow is created around the dots.

I carried on stencilling, using the Tim Holtz Measuring stencil and Wendy Vecchi's Polka Dotty stencil and a tiny circles stencil.

The stencilling was carried over to the smaller stencil and then I started to stamp.  I used the little swirl stamp from the Artistic Outpost Serenity stamp set using Archival Cornflower Blue ink. I then stamped some text using the same Archival ink.

For the smallest tag I've used the text stamp from the Artistic Outpost Secretary Pool set and also stamped the pencil from the same set and cut it out. I used this text stamp and added some more stamping to the two other tags. I edged all three tags using blue acrylic paint to add some definition.

The main image is from the Artistic Outpost Generation Redux set and I've stamped it onto some card that's been painted with a pale cream acrylic paint. I've then cut the image out. The sentiment is from the Quote and Quotables set and I've used Cornflower Blue Archival ink. The resin rose was painted with acrylic paint and then I brushed over it with some metallic wax. I also painted the key with acrylic paint and dabbed it off using a baby wipe. The clock button is from the Prima Lyric button set.

I painted the resin plaque, that started it's life as pink, with blue acrylic paint and also brushed some metallic wax over the top.

The ribbon on all three tags is seam binding that I've dyed with Archival Cornflower Blue ink.

I hope you've enjoyed today's step x step.
