Friday Focus - Texture Fades and Dies

Trace here with today's Friday Focus here at Frilly and Funkie and wow, have I been having fun! The products in the spotlight this Friday are Sizzix Dies Texture Fades embossing folders. I have decided to play with some of the fabulous new dies of 2014. I wanted to show how you can use these in such different ways and there are lots I ran out of time to use! It's a great time to stock up as these products will have an extra 15% discount applied to them for this week only at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Here are the main dies I focused on (although I used lots more!)

Bigz XL Die 'Jumbo Tattered Florals', Bigz Die 'Garden Greens', and Decorative Strip Die 'Spring Greenery'.
I made several pieces to show off various parts of these dies in different styles and using different products, using other dies too and also some Texture Fades embossing folders.
Tag #1
For this tag, I die cut the flower from card for most of the layers and also a layer from crinoline. The great thing about this die is it will cut all manner of materials. I coloured them using Tumbled Glass Distress Stain and Broken China Distress Ink. I added one of the buttons from the Boutique to the centre of the flower having coloured it with Distress Paint. The Garden Greens die was used to cut the foliage which for this piece I left plain.
The base tag was embossed using one of Tim's newly released Texture Fades embossing folders. I embossed the top half of the tag, then turned it around and lined it up and embossed the bottom half. As this folder has a repeat pattern it is fairly easy to align. I then dipped it into Distress Stains to get a dappled colour and edged with Distress Ink. The tag was finished with some butterfly die cuts from the new 'Butterfly Frenzy' strip die, some Prima swirls and some seam binding and Idea-ology.

Tag #2
For this tag I wanted to create something a little different. I used  the same dies as above but used a different sized flower and lots more colour. I die cut this flower from patterned paper and added a numbered brad for the centre.
To add some contrast and another die I used the new Frameworks Honeycomb die (which I love) to add some interest in the corners, filling only some of the spaces with patterned paper pieces.
We all know how cool Texture Fades embossing folders are for creating texture but what else can they be used for? Well here I used one as a stamp to add stamped detail. I inked the raised areas of the Texture Fades folder with distress ink...
and then used as a stamp...
to create this detail.
I completed the tag with some splattered Black Soot Distress Paint, plenty of rub ons and some dyed seam binding.

Tag #3
Here I used the largest flower; what a  huge bloom and so gorgeous! I die cut it from ivory card, spritzed with lots of water, scrunched it up and left it to dry. When dry, I unfurled and shaped it, adding a rusty bell to the centre.
For the base of the tag I again used a Texture Fades embossing folder, again a little differently. I applied some Wendy Vecchi embossing paste to the corners of the large tag and then pressed the Texture Fades folder into the paste (remember to clean it off thoroughly afterwards).
Once dry I inked it with Distress ink. This gives a great textured feel to the piece and another use for those folders!

Tag #4
For this tag the focal point is a flower cut from four layers of crinoline, dyed with Distress Stain.
I have added some foliage from the strip die, coloured with Distress Ink and spritzed with colour using new Distress Spritzer and a Distress Marker. I also added some stamping, again using a Texture Fades folder.
I completed the tag using some more butterfly die cuts and a Pediment die...
and finally some seam binding at the top.

Tag #5
For this tag I used the same dies but die cut from Clearly for Art (in white) which I covered with some Frosted Film and coloured with Distress Markers.
I also used the off cuts from the die cut foliage to create a stencil, which I used with white embossing paste.
This is how it looked inked up and stamped over.
I completed the tag with lace, Chit Chat Stickers and seam binding left white.

Finally, Tag #6
Here I made the tag into a hanging panel, embossing it and inking with Distress Ink, adding it to a base covered with book paper , Tissue Tape and Distress Stains. For the flower I covered some card in Ranger foil, die cut it, embossed it using a Texture Fades folder, and coloured it with Distress Paint (which was wiped off in places).
I added some foliage cut with the Spring Greenery strip die, and covered it in embossing ink and a mix of Distress embossing powders.
I also added some Trellis Frameworks die cuts to the side and popped on a Word Band to complete it.

I hope this have given you some food for thought and some inspiration for ways you can use your dies and Texture Fades. I have lots more ideas too as the list seems endless. They are so versatile such a great addition to your stash whatever your style.  And remember, these products will have an extra 15% discount applied to them for this week only at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

keep those fingers inky!

Welcome to today's Guest Designer, Nicola!

Today we are welcoming back Nicola of Paper Profusion, as our Guest Designer. Nicola was chosen by the DT as the winner of the Neglected Dies challenge.

So, let's move to hear from Nicola and also see the beautiful project she's made for the current challenge Flights of Fancy.

I’m Nicola a.k.a. ‘Paper Profusion’ living in Dublin, Ireland.  I’ve loved handicrafts for as long as I can remember, probably inspired by my Mum who excelled at every single crafting technique out there. From very young I was an avid knitter and always enjoyed learning crafts especially ones involving paper. I’m now medically retired however during my ‘career / good health years’ my main creative hobby was photography especially travel/wildlife related. During a time of serious illness, I became hooked on paper crafting as it gave me an outlet to a home based hobby that I could dabble in, at my own pace. I’m particularly drawn to the vintage / shabby chic genres usually adding lots of embellishments and ribbon.

I love creating anything with birds and butterflies so this theme made my card easy for me to do. I’m glad to have finally tucked into the stunning Maja Design papers that I was so fortunate to have recently won.  They are beautiful to work with and it's impossible to choose which side to cut. These papers are from the Vintage Spring collection.

I hope this little bird’s eggs hatch very soon! Thank-you so much to all at Frilly & Funkie for allowing me feature today as Guest Designer. It’s always a privilege to be associated with this wonderful challenge.

I'm sure you'll agree that Nicola's card is absolutely beautiful and has provided even more inspiration for the current challenge Flights of Fancy. If you would like the chance to join us as a Guest Designer all you have to do is join in with the current challenge!

Saturday Step x Step - Collage Card

Welcome to another Saturday Step X Step here at Frilly and Funkie.  It's Cec here and this week I am going to show you how I put the collage card together that I made last month for my Mother-in-Law's 92nd birthday.

There aren't a pile of techniques involved in this one so it was quite easy to create and here is how I did it - from the bottom up.

The card is an 8" square so after I made a card blank that would hold the weight of all the bits and pieces I was going to add, I created the background.  I started with a piece of grey card stock and stenciled a honeycomb pattern on three sides using some Wild Honey Distress Ink.  Then I stenciled some dots using Black Soot Distress Ink.  Finally I distressed the edges with my scissors and inked the edges with more Black Soot.

Next I chose a bunch of papers from my scraps that I thought would go with some Pion paper I was going to use.  I cut them in various lengths and widths and after I inked the edges with Black Soot Distress Ink, I laid them out in a random pattern.

Next I added a strip of Venise Lace to the horizontal piece of black paper and added a piece of narrow black satin ribbon across the top of the lace. The sentiment banner was added next and I made that on my computer.

Using a Spellbinders Square Fleur de Lis die, I cut my Pion paper and then cut it in half saving the other half for another card. I inked the edges with Black Soot Distress Ink and then added it on top of the left vertical strip of patterned paper. I added a tiny piece of black lace beside it at the bottom. The lace came from my Mother-in-Law's sewing basket.

Next I created an embossed panel using the grey card stock, a Tim Holtz texture fade and some more Black Soot Distress Ink.  The panel was centred over the die cut and then I added a strip of crochet lace trim.

I cut a smaller piece of grey card stock from the Fleur de Lis die, inked the edges with more Black Soot Distress Ink and then added this wonderful vintage image of a British actress named Lilly Elsie.  The image added to the top of the embossed panel.

Next I started working on some of the additional embellishments, including the flower at the top left.  I started with a white flower from Michaels and stamped some script on it with Jet Black Archival Ink.  Next came a yellow Prima flower and then a floral button with a black burlap string bow.

The butterfly came next and was a bronze colour but I painted it with some black craft paint.

Once the paint was dry, I clear embossed it to make it shine and added it below the white lace using Glue and Seal to make sure it didn't come off.

Next I added some black pearl flourishes, a clock button, a gold star from my stash and the wonderful art deco two-toned button that also came from my Mother-in-Law's sewing basket (or that of her late Sister - sorry I can't remember which).

Finally I gathered some black crochet lace into a circle, added it to a lace medallion and then topped it off with a resin flower.

I hope you will be inspired to go through your craft room and pulls out some bits and pieces to make a collage card yourself.

The following products used in the creation of this collage card are available at The Funkie Junkie Boutique so if you want some new things for your card, check out the shop for all sorts of goodies.

Friday Focus - Distress Stains

Hello and welcome to today's Friday Focus here at Frilly and Funkie! It's Sue here and today the product I'm focussing on is Distress Stains. This coming week there will be a 15% discount on the price of all Distress Stains at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Distress Stains are available in all of the colours that are in the Distress Ink range, so blending together is really easy !

I've used one of the large jumbo tags that Linda sells in the Funkie Junkie Boutique. I scribbled Picked Raspberry, Seedless Preserve, Ripe Persimmon and Picket Fence onto my craft sheet and 'swooshed' the tag through the ink.

I then used a stamp from the Tim Holtz Mixed Media set and swiped Picket Fence Distress Stains over it and stamped onto the tag.

I continued stamping with different colour Distress Stains.

I then used Watering Can Archival Ink and Tim Holtz stamps from the Artful Tools and Classic 4 sets.

I then used Pumice Stone Distress Ink around the edge to frame the tag.

I used more Picked Raspberry Distress Stain to dye some seam binding, which is great as you can co-ordinate you ribbon with your project.

I used the Artistic Outpost A Lovely Day stamp set and blended Distress Inks over the images.

I added some tissue tape, washi tape, lace and embellishments to finish.

I used a second jumbo tag to create a small tag book. I used lots of Distress Stains on the tag to start and then I sprayed it with Ink Refresher, which gave the tag a lovely leathery feel.

I hope you've enjoyed today's focus on Distress Stains and remember they are discounted by 15% through to April 10th at The Funkie Junkie Boutique!
