Saturday Step by Step - Peeled Paste

Hi everyone. Jenny here with a tutorial for you as part of our regular Frilly and Funkie Saturday Step by Step feature. As so many of us are 'visual learners' I've got plenty of photos to share and by the end you should be able to recreate the backgrounds for both of these cards (oh yes, you're getting two for the price of one today!!!)

Let's make a start. Use a piece of Cut n Dry foam to apply white gesso to a large damask stamp and repeat stamp to create a background resist pattern. Dry thoroughly. Repeat with another piece of card.
Add Tattered Rose, Shabby Shutters, Old Paper and Scattered Straw Distress Inks to your craft mat, spritz with water and dab your first piece of stamped card onto this mixture. Allow the ink to run together in places and dry with your heat gun. Continue to dip and dry your card into the remaining ink until it is all mopped up. Repeat with your second piece of stamped card.
Blend Tattered Rose Ink over both backgrounds to cover any white areas and dry thoroughly.
Mix some White Embossing Paste with Shabby Shutters Distress Paint into a smooth paste.
Apply the paste through a trellis style stencil in a strip down one side of the first piece of card.
Take your second piece of card, place it on top of the stencil and smooth down to transfer some of the paste onto it.
Peel the card away to reveal a patterned surface to both cards. Remove and clean the stencil.
Apply silver embossing powder to a few areas of the stencilled paste on the first piece of card.
Now apply gold embossing powder and Distress embossing powder (this one's Antique Linen) to some of the other stencilled areas.
Finally add some Distress Glitter (mine is a mix of three colours) to any remaining uncovered stencilled areas. Heat the paste and powder, allowing them to dry, bubble and harden.
Repeat this process on the second piece of stencilled card, using paler colours (I used Frosted Crystal, opaque white and Ranger Snowflake Tinsel embossing powder).
Add die cut trellis pieces and some leaf stems over the paste areas. The silver foil trellis was embossed and the stem was cut from glossy card covered in alcohol inks (colours below). The patterned trellis was cut from the floral paper in the Tim Holtz Menagerie collection and covered in Crackle Accents. The stem was cut from Kraft Coredinations card. You can shape the leaves with a ball tool for added dimension.
To finish add more leaves, some shabby flowers (I made mine but you can use bought ones if time is limited) and stamp a sentiment in Jet Black Archival ink; Wendy Vecchi has some inspiring and thoughtful ones within her stamp collections. Here are a few close up shots to finish.

Hope you've enjoyed today's tutorial and feel inspired to give the ideas a go. Try using your favourite colours and mix in the embossing powders you have in your stash; adding different types and sizes adds to the texture. You'll find links below to the products I used for reference purposes while The Funkie Junkie Boutique is closed temporarily.

Have a great weekend,
Jenny xxx

Welcome to today's Guest Designer, Astrid !

Today we are welcoming Astrid of Astrid's Artistic Efforts, as the Guest Designer. Astrid was chosen by the DT as the winner of the Flights of Fancy challenge. Let's move on quickly and find out more about Astrid and also her beautiful project.

My name is Astrid and I have been paper crafting and stamping probably for about 10 years or so, but did not get seriously into it until about 2007.

Being a teacher by profession I received my first stamp, a box of embossing powers and embossing ink, as a Christmas present from a child in my class whose mum owned a rubber stamp shop. That was the beginning of a hobby that no doubt will last well into retirement!

My paper crafting hobby has developed from those early stamping and card making days into using many different media and I would like to call myself a mixed media artist. I love journaling, altering all sorts of objects and playing about with gesso, acrylic paints, collage and many layers. Often I use my stamps more for creating backgrounds rather than as a main vocal point. Having said that, on occasion I still return to my roots and I still love to make cards with stamping as the vocal point.

I would like to start with saying a huge big thank you for the invitation to do a guest design spot for Frilly and Funkie! It is a huge honour to be featured alongside such a talented team!

For my project I decided to make an accordion card using one of my favourite Tim Holtz dies, the Vintage Cabinet Card one. My chosen stamps came mostly from the Artistic Outpost Birds of a Feather set, as a final tribute to this wonderful stamp company that will soon be no more in its present form.

After long consideration my chosen word became “soar”, one of the words I chose as my words of power for 2014.

A detailed description of my project can be found on my blog http://astridsartisticefforts.blogspot.com

I'm sure you will agree that Astrid's project is stunning and has given loads more inspiration for the current challenge which is Words, Words, Words.

If you would like to join us as a Guest Designer all you need to do is join in with the current challenge !

Saturday Step x Step - Vintage Collage

Hello and welcome to today's Step x Step ! It's Sue here and as promised I'm back today to share the Step x Step for my project for the current On the Runway challenge.

I started with a piece of greyboard (chipboard) covered in white card and I also cut a triangle as this will form the stand for  the piece.

I then tore up some pieces from an old book and glued them to the board using Matt Medium, making sure I gave the paper a coat of glue too.

When the glue was dry I then used a baby wipe with acrylic paint starting with the light colour and working to dark, blending the colours and making sure to dry them in between each layer. (Excuse the colour of my fingers I'd just finished working with a Dylusions spray!)

For the next layer I used the gorgeous Prima stencil masking off areas I didn't want and stencilling some of the words using acrylic paint and a stencil brush. I also stamped some text on the left hand side using Watering Can Archival ink, which you'll see in a later photo.

Now I wanted to start gathering the pieces for the collage. I die cut the dress form and painted it with acrylic paint. When it was dry I used Wendy Vecchi's Crackled Texture Paste. When the paste had dried I blended some Adirondack inks down the right side to get to the colour I wanted.

The doily was die cut using the Tim Holtz Distressed Doily die and I then stamped it using a stamp from the Tim Holtz Artful tools set using Watering Can Archival ink.

To create the colour I wanted I used a mix of Distress Inks and blended them over the doily.

The next piece was the pediment top, which I've also used the crackle paste on. I then used the same Adirondack inks as the dress form to create the colour I wanted then darkened the edges using Watering Can Archival ink.

Most of the pieces are made now but I felt I needed a little metal somewhere on the project. I used one of the Filigree metal corners, painted it black with arcylic paint and then used Pewter Distress stains over the top, dabbing off some of the colour.

The final piece I made was this ribbon measuring tape, I used a piece of Seam Binding and again with Watering Can Archival Ink I stamped the image on the binding. Now it's time to put it all together !

I glued the pediment to the top, it wasn't quite as wide as the main piece but I was OK with that. The gorgeous button is one from Linda's Funkie Junkie Boutique as is the lace.

The window is die cut using the Tim Holtz Window die and I've just blended Distress Inks over it and I also did a little spritz and flick before glueing the filigree corner into place. The text has been stamped onto card that's been painted with acrylic paint. I then cut out the words and glued them to mount board to create small tiles. The buttons are layered onto little eyelets that I had on my desk left over from when I was die cutting some tags. I painted them and added the buttons on top.

I pleated the stamped measuring tape and glued it into place. The flower is made from UTEE and a mold that I'd made previously. It's been painted with acrylic paint and then brushed with some metallic wax. The shabby dress form is one of the gorgeous pieces from the Ingvild Bolme Prima collection. I die cut a bottle top and stamped a sewing reel image on the top. I've also added some washi tape and more lace to finish.

The triangular piece that I showed you at the start has been glued to the back and therefore the project is free standing.

I hope you've enjoyed today's Step x Step and you've still got time to join in with the current challenge, On the Runway.

Sue

Friday Focus

Hi everyone, Linda here. I wanted to take a moment to give you a heads up on some happenings with The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

It's been very busy these last few months with all the pre-orders generated from the new products released at Winter 2014 CHA. This is the first year I have offered so many pre-order options and it's been a juggling act for me to coordinate mailing all the products as they arrived. Most of the products have come into stock but a few are still outstanding. If you have any questions on products that you have not received, please feel free to email me at thefunkiejunkie@gmail.com. I will check on the status of your pre-ordered product and get back to you.

The big news is that The Funkie Junkie Boutique is growing. It’s gotten to the point where the boutique has outgrown my home-based business. I have just signed a lease for commercial space and will be moving the shop into its new home and will be hiring a part-time employee. I want to assure you that while TFJB is growing that I do not have my sights set on becoming a super store. I love being a boutique that focuses on providing a fun and funkie range of crafting products and an enjoyable shopping experience as well as catering to individual customer service. My growth and expansion will help me serve you better!

This expansion comes with a down side and that is that I will be closing for a couple of weeks. I thought it was a good time to take a few days off and then will be closed for inventory shifting and organizing in the new space. The Boutique will not take any orders after midnight Eastern Time on May 1st through May 16th. The website will reopen on May 16th for you to start placing orders again and orders will begin shipping (first come/first served) on May 19th. Please be assured that if you have any questions or issues with an order during the time I am closed, you can email me at thefunkiejunkie@gmail.com. I get the emails on my phone and will respond to your inquiry in a timely manner.

As a result of this the usual Friday Focus posts will be missing from our Frilly and Funkie weekly schedule for a couple of weeks, but they will be back on May 16th in time for The Boutique re-opening.

It's going to be an exciting few months here at The Funkie Junkie Boutique and I look forward to serving you in the future.

Linda
