Our Newest Guest Designer - Ginny Nemchak

It is time to introduce our newest Guest Designer. Say hello and a give a big welcome to Ginny Nemchak of Polly's Paper Studio. Ginny was the Top Choice from our 'Love is in the Air' challenge.

"Hey there Peeps! Ginny here and I'm just tickled pink to be guest designing this month for Frilly & Funkie. A little about me...I'm living a very blessed life out on a dirt road in the country with my hubby of 23 years and one nearly grown Son left at home and one in college. I get to "play paper" as my dream job and loving every minute of it.

My crafty interests are ever evolving and my current obsession is mixed media. Cards and tags are my real passion...although I do enjoy 3d projects and mini albums. I'm thrilled to be joining the talented F&F designers this month as they are a constant source of inspiration to me."

"This project was really a combination of all the things that came to mind for a "Hip To Be Square" hippie theme. Owls of course are a classic retro icon. I created mine with a layering of retro patterned papers and assembled with spacers between the layers for depth. Just to be cheeky I added a tiny handcrafted pair of glasses to make my owl a real" square".

I used a variety of retro inspired chipboard pieces colored in the essential burnt orange and avocados which adds graphic detail and great pops of color. I gave my owl a little home in a recycled stamp carton to create a shadow box effect and attached it to a MDF board covered in some really groovy printed paper.

Last but not least.....coordinating flowers because all 70's hippies were flower child's right? This project was really a walk on the "Funky" side for me....but I love how it turned out!!! Maybe I have an inner flower child waiting to come out????"

We're Moving...Again!

Hello Frilly and Funkie Friends,

Big news here on the home front!  The Funkie Junkie Boutique has once again outgrown it's shop space and we are excited to be moving into a new space.  Our move is scheduled for the weekend of April 1st.  The website will be open for orders but we won't be shipping Friday, April 1st through Monday April 4th to give us time to tear everything down, pack it up and move it across town to our new digs.

The downside of moving is that we have SO MUCH inventory, some of it has been on Clearance for awhile now plus we have just added more overstocks to our Clearance section.  The prices have already been significantly reduced and the good news for you is we are offering another 15% off our Clearance section.  Just use the coupon code Moving and you will receive an extra 15% everything in your cart from the Clearance section of our shop!

The coupon is good through the end of March, but shop early because we won't be restocking most of these items.  For items we always stock, such as the distress ink products, once the overstock is sold out, they will go back to our regular pricing as we will continue to stock those items.

Happy shopping!

Saturday Step by Step: Wildflower Card

Hello everyone and welcome, Zoe here. I am delighted to be your host for this Saturday Step by Step with Frilly and Funkie. As we shake off winter and get ready to greet the new season, it inspired me to break open the new wildflower thinlits die set and make a spring card. Here's how...

Step 1: Cut a piece of paper 4.25  x 5.5 inches and cover with a light layer of white gesso using a distress collage brush.

Step 2: Once completely dry, distress the edges and machine or hand stitch.

Step 3: Take distress watercolor cardstock and die cut a couple of the flowers and a wall from the Tim Holtz wildflower and mixed media 3 thinlits die sets. Cut the wall away from the cardstock so you are just left with the outline.

Step 4:  Gather the wildflower die cuts and distress crayons.

Step 5: Lightly apply the distress crayons to the die cut and rub with your finger. Brush water over the top with a paint brush to blend the crayons.

Step 6: Use the same distress crayon technique with the wall die cut and once dry, attach to background with a dab of glossy accents. Scribble distress crayon onto a non-stick craft mat and spritz with water. Mix with a paintbrush and brush over the brick work to create a shadow. It's just like watercolouring!

Step 7: Attach the wildflowers to the background with another dab of glossy accents to the stalks and center of the flowers. Carefully lift some of the petals to give dimension to the card.

Step 8: Dab antique linen and vintage photo distress crayon to the edges of the background and blend with your finger. Add rubons or stamps, (I used butterflies from Tim Holtz remnant rubs). Add a metal embellishment, (I used an idea-ology mini plaque). Finally spritz with ground espresso distress marker with the marker spritzer.

Step 9: Mount the background onto paper, (I used paper from the Tim Holtz Dapper paper stash), which I mounted onto a sheet of the new denim from the Tim Holtz textile surfaces.

You could also add a sentiment to the card to suit a specific occasion.

I hope you enjoyed the step by step. Don' forget to take a look at the current "Make it a trio" challenge and have a great weekend.

Friday Focus - Metal Embellishments

Hello and welcome to today's Friday Focus! It's Sue here and the product under the spotlight today is metal embellishments. As an added bonus Linda is including an extra 15% discount to metal embellishments at The Funkie Junkie Boutique!

I do love to include metal embellishments in my projects as well as sheet metal. I gathered lots of embellishments on my table then got started!

I picked this frame up last year and thought the little sections would be perfect for metal embellishments.

I painted the frame and sectioned piece with Gesso not really sure where I was headed at this point.

I then started to glue metal embellishments onto the frame, Linda has so many wonderful items in The Funkie Junkie Boutique! I cut some lengths of Tim Holtz ball chain and glued it along the edges of the frame. Once eveything had dried and the embellishments were secure I painted the whole thing black with black Gesso. After this had dried I then lightly brushed white Gesso over the embellishments and the frame.

I then grabbed some Lindy's Stamp Gang sprays and spritzed them over the frame. Then to add a little more highlighting I've used some gold acrylic paint.

Now to sort out the inside of the frame. I didn't paint this black instead I dry brushed around the edges with black acrylic paint then spritzed it with Lindy's Stamp Gang sprays. As these sprays are permanent when dry it's easy to layer on top of them.

I had a scrap piece of aluminium sheet metal on my desk so I ran it through my Big Shot using the Tim Holtz embossing folder. Then using Cut 'n' Dry foam I dabbed black acrylic paint over it.

I spritzed the piece with Lindy's Stamp Gang sprays which have aged the metal beautifully.

Here is the finished piece and as you can see I added a metal embellishment to most of the little compartments. Once you get started on a project like this you start to get creative with how you can use the embellishments.

Layering up pieces and seeing what will fit inside recesses, like the little bottle cap on the metal flower and the number brad inside the little bottle cap. Also using a little eyelet screw to let the heart charm hang loose in it's recess.

Collaging metal pieces always creates lots of interest and when they're all painted come together to create impressive features on your work. Finally a sentiment from one of the many fabulous choices by Wendy Vecchi !

I hope you've enjoyed my project using lots of metal embellishments!

Let's make it a trio!

Hello and welcome, it's Sue here and I'm your host for the latest challenge! One of the things I love to do is work in 3's on a project, 3 tags, 3 panels, 3 arches etc.... so for this challenge I'd like to see projects including 3 of something, and this does need to be the main focal point of your project.

At the end of the challenge the team will choose their top four picks. Our first place winner will be invited to join us in a Guest DT spot here at Frilly and Funkie. Three additional talented participants will receive badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and adheres to the challenge guidelines will be entered into a drawing to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique!

The guidelines for entering are simple; create a new vintage or shabby chic project following the challenge theme, link it below to your post (not just your blog) and include a link back to this challenge in your post. You can combine our challenge with up to 10 challenges (including this one) to be in with a chance of winning. Make sure you follow the guidelines, as unfortunately we have had to eliminate entrants from the prize draws in the past when they have entered too many other challenges. If you are entering through a public forum please use keyword F&F. Also, please be sure to turn off your Word Verification so our design team can leave comments on your blogs.

This week the Funkie side of the team have created some amazing projects to give your inspiration a helping hand!  Make sure you click on each photo a a closer look!
