Guest Designer - Jess Madaglia

It is time to introduce you to our Guest Designer for The Sound of Music challenge. Please say hello and welcome to Jess Madaglia of  Two Mad Dahlias, who was the top pick from the 'Count Me In' challenge.

Hi! I am so excited to be joining the Sound of Music challenge as a guest designer.

Thank you to the team for asking me to submit a project. I am a Boston girl now living in Arizona with my husband, daughter, and four kitties. I am an avid junker and a voracious reader I have been crafting for many years and love all of the different opportunities it has brought me.

I really wanted to push myself for this challenge so I tried something brand new to me and made an exploding canvas using tissue wrap, inks, vintage sheet music, embossing powders, and more. It was pretty stressful cutting into a canvas I had decorated and knew there was no going back once the knife sliced through.

***************

You are going to want to pop over to Jess's blog to check out all the details of how she made this fabulous canvas.  When you are finished, come on back and share your music creation with us.  The challenge can be found here and runs until 11:55 pm EST on May 23rd.

Saturday Step x Step - Scenic Route

Hi!  Suzz here, sharing a Saturday Step x Step with some fun techniques to create a beautiful underwater adventure.

I had recently acquired some of the new stencils and stamps from The Funkie Junkie Boutique and couldn't wait to create an underwater scene using the new watery background stencil.

I started with mixed media paper to give my tag a nice sturdy base.
 1. Place stencil over tag. Spray with mix of blue and green distress stain sprays over stencil.  Take a roll of paper towels and roll over the stencil with sprays to pick up excess spray. Lift up stencil and let tag dry.

2.  Because of the size of tag I like to create I had about a 1/2" of paper not inked up from the stencil. I decided to sponge it blue to start with. I masked off the stenciled part and sponged with the dye ink.

3. My next step was to create a shimmery effect to make the tag look more like a magical underwater adventure.  I placed the stencil back over the inked surface and sponged versamark watermark ink over my sprayed surface.  I then removed the stencil and sprinkled the entire surface with a glittery embossing powder.  You can do something similar with clear embossing powder and heating it up and while it is still moist sprinkle a clear fine glitter over the surface.

 Double click on the image and you can see the sparkle on the ink.  I used this same technique on all the pieces of the tag to keep the shimmer going.

3. Stamp the octopus using black archival ink on mixed media paper.

 4. Color the image by painting with the spray using a waterbrush. Cut out using detail scissors.

 4. Versamark the image all over and heat emboss with glittery clear embossing powder.

5.  The shimmery effect was accented with two green gems for his eyes.

6.  The blue trim along the top needed a punch of black.  I stamped the manufacturing label on mixed media paper using black ink. I repeated this twice.  I cut to fit the top and bottom of the tag.  I colored with a waterbrush and colored pencils.

7. Create two black stripes by masking the stamped image and smearing black archival ink along the bottom.

8. Cut strips of cardstock and sponge black to match.

 9. Add the word adventure by laying stencil along bottom of the tag. Apply black embossing paste through stencil. While the embossing paste is wet sprinkle glittery embossing powder over stenciled word.

10. Heat emboss the embossing powder.  I applied the shimmer embossing powder over the stamped top and bottom as well to give the same glossy shimmery finish.

 11. Die Cut leafy background piece. Spray with coordinating distress stain sprays.  Sponge edges with black die ink.  Stamp Manufacturing label over leafy die cut using black archival ink.

12. Attach clear glassy bubbles.  Using glue pen paint surface of bubbles and sprinkle with ultrafine glitter.

I hope you enjoyed our scenic route via the underwater adventure.  The products used are listed below.  They are available at 20% off list at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Put on Your Inking Cap

Hello, Friends! It's Kathy here, and I'm delighted to be hosting the latest challenge here at Frilly & Funkie. Our theme this go round is "Put on Your Inking Cap." If you know anything about me at all, you know that I adore designer paper. It's my "go to" product for nearly everything I make. But not this time around! For this challenge we are asking you to create a vintage or shabby chic project without using any designer paper. You can use inks, mists, paints, texture paste, fabric, felt, embossing powders, pencils, markers, pastels, chalks...the sky is the limit! As long as you are not using designer paper on the front of your project, you are golden.

The lovely and creative Eileen Hull generously donated a set of her HeARTfelt Journal cover sets to each member of the team, so each of us has created a lovely Traveler's Notebook style journal to share with you for this challenge. However, you do NOT have to create a journal to play along!

If you are looking for Eileen's Journal Bigz XL Die, you can pre-order it from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

The team will choose their top four picks with the winner being invited to join us in a Guest DT spot here at Frilly and Funkie and the next three will receive badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

The guidelines for entering are simple; create a new vintage or shabby chic project following the challenge theme, link it below to your post (not just your blog) and also include a link back to this challenge in your post. You can combine our challenge with up to 10 challenges (including this one) to be in with a chance of winning. If you are entering through a public forum (such as Instagram) you'll need to include the words Frilly and Funkie Challenge. Also, please be sure to turn off your Word Verification so our Design Team can leave comments on your blogs. Make sure you follow these rules as unfortunately we have had to eliminate entrants from the prize draws in the past.

The Funkie side of the Design Team is back with more gorgeous inspiration and we are thrilled to have a special Guest Designer, Julia Aston, joining us this week;

Special Design Team Guest
Julia Aston - Create With Me

Suzanne Czosek - Suzz's Stamping Spot

Jenny Marples - Pushing The Right Buttons

******************************************************

So get out your inks, chalks, markers, embossing powders, stamps, stencils, mists and paints, etc. and share your non-designer paper project with us before end of day on Tuesday, May 9th. Don't forget to come back tomorrow when our latest Guest Designer will be sharing a new project with us. And remember to visit again on Wednesday, May 3rd when there will be more inspiration from the Funkie side of the Design Team.

Go put on your inking cap, and get your craft on!

Friday Focus - Idea-ology

It's Zoe Hillman's turn to share a brand new Friday Focus with you today. This is our opportunity to share with you ideas, tips and techniques for using a specific product or range currently available at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. And even better news, those products then have an extra 15% discount added through the coming two weeks! In the spotlight this time is the Tim Holtz Idea-ology range.

Zoe loves using items from the Idea-ology range in her projects as focal points, embellishments and even to create backgrounds. Here are a selection of some of her projects;

The plane from the Adornments Souvenir set just needed a touch of paint to enhance it before taking centre stage on her layered postcard.

This little vignette house was transformed into a floral masterpiece with some Bouquet Findings, coloured with Distress Sprays.

Tim Holtz' new Idea-ology Paper Dolls have been a huge hit since their launch in January and you can see why - they reside beautifully in this house perched on Letterpress Blocks. A Decorative Dome sits perfectly on a Finial (from the mixed set).

The addition of Mushroom alcohol ink to this Adornments Index Clip gave it an aged look to fit with the layers of Distress Inked card below. And the little window in the clip allowed Zoe to add some Rub On numbers as a clever detail.

Sometimes you simply need to use a portion of an embellishment to finish a project; removing the prongs from the fork in the Adornments Silverware set made it just the right height for the bottom of this card.

Lining up a number of Mini Gears can make more of a statement on a project, particularly when using all of the colours which come in the set. And for even more impact use a Game Spinner on top of one of them, attaching it with a Hex Fastener.

The Idea-ology range also includes items which can be used to create backgrounds; collage together an assortment of elements from the Ephemera packs for a beautiful vintage quilt. Adding Collage Mediums and Distress Crayons over the top blend them together seamlessly. Then add a little globe from back where we started with the Adornments Souvenir set, painted to highlight the detailed features.

By now you should see why Zoe is such a huge fan of the Idea-ology range for creating and completing her gorgeous projects. Remember, for the next two weeks there is an additional 15% discount on them so now is definitely a great time to stock up on your supplies.

Guest Designer - Donna Billek

Please say hello again to Donna Billek, who is our the Guest Designer for the Put Your Inking Cap On challenge.  Donna's blog is Inkysplatters and she was the Top Pick from the You've Got to Know When to Fold Em challenge.

Hello! I am so pleased to be joining the current challenge, Put Your Inking Cap On, for the Frilly & Funkie Challenge Blog as a guest designer! It is such an honor to be asked to submit a guest designer project so thank you to the Frilly and Funkie Design Team. Thank you also goes to Linda who graciously supports the challenge blog and to all of you who submit projects for the challenges. I am always amazed at the talent and types of projects submitted!

As many of you may know, I live in the beautiful state of Colorado with my beloved and our four-legged furry family. While I’m still pretty new to mixed media, I enjoy learning new techniques or trying out new products every time I’m working on a project. There’s nothing like forcing yourself to work outside your comfort zone and this current project was no different!

This challenge is great fun as we can’t use any pre-patterned papers and, if you are anything like me, it was definitely a challenge! So, out came the stencils, inks, paints, flowers, tissue wrap, archival ink, and stamps! I decided on a cream, purple, and brown set of colors which, to be honest, is not a normal set of colors for me. I started off by creating my background for the canvas using plain Idea-ology tissue wrap, a stamp, and archival ink.

* * *
Donna has definitely risen to the challenge with this lovely canvas.  How fun that purple seems to be the go-to colour for this challenge.  If you want to see more details of her creation and how she created without patterned paper, just click here to be taken to her blog. When you are finished come on back and share your inky creation with us. You have lots of time because the challenge, which can be found here, runs until Tuesday, May 9th at 11:55 pm EST.
