Saturday Step X Step - Fab Flowers

Marjie Kemper here, happy to be hosting today's Step X Step.  I'm showing the flowers I made for a canvas I posted on my blog earlier this week. Sometimes it's good to look around and remember all the supplies you've amassed, giving yourself a little nudge to use them again.  I pulled out my Tattered Florals die and several texture fade embossing folders, and got busy.

The Tattered Florals die is one of my favorites. After diecutting the flowers, I embossed them using a variety of Sizzix texture fades, and then colored some using a combination of Perfect Pearls Mists. The technique is from the Compendium of Curiosities, Tim Holtz's fab technique book. The rest I left black.

I neglected to mention that I'd adhered a piece of Clearly for Art modeling film by Wendy Vecchi to the back of some of the black cardstock before diecutting.  You can heat this material and then while it's still warm, curl the edges and it will retain the shape. I've heard some people are able to achieve this with heavy packaging material, too. It's very effective for flower petals.

You can use a pencil or paintbrush to roll the warmed petals.  A closer look at the 'held' shapes:

I stacked the colored flowers over plain black flowers, using brads, buttons and punched black circles for variety.  Some are glued flat and some are raised up with foam tape and 3D glue dots.  I like having the dimensional effect on my canvas.   If you'd like to read more about the canvas itself, details are on my blog here.

Thanks for visiting us today!  Remember our new challenge opened Wednesday and we look forward to your joining us with a canvas of your own.  It can be a stand alone piece, or you can use smaller parts of canvas material on any creation of your liking.

It's open through August 21st, all are welcome, and there's a $25 gift certificate to the shop in it for a lucky winner.
