April in Paris WInners

Saturday Step X Step

Welcome to another Saturday Step X Step here at Frilly and Funkie, hosted today by Buttons (that's me!) I'm sticking with the upcyling theme from our current challenge as today is Earth Day.

For our previous challenge I created some flowers with an interesting component - has anyone guessed yet? All will be revealed... but to start with cover some white card in a mix of Spiced Marmalade and Victorian Velvet Distress Paint and Antiqued Bronze Distress Stain. If you dab all three onto your craft mat and spritz with water you can smoosh your card into the mixture several times until it is covered, drying after each layer. It is also important to colour the reverse side with paint (I chose to stick to Victorian Velvet).

Now cut out your flowers in different sizes - one large outer, one small inner for each. Dab the top side of each flower with Mustard Seed Distress Paint. You don't need to be accurate.

To add further depth and ensure there are no white edges sponge Victorian Velvet Distress Ink onto the outside of each flower - no need to be accurate again here as the ink blends into the paint as it dries.

It is important to stick the flowers together at this stage, and then roll each petal around a thin paint brush, pencil or similar to add some dimension. Having said that they should remain squashy enough to be added to cards and still fit inside an envelope if stuck on a card!

And now for the big reveal... yes, I've used the plastic net which held the mini Easter eggs for the 'egg cups'! You will find this sort of net is used to contain all sorts of things including confectionery, fruit and vegetables, and also comes in lots of different colours. If you don't already have a hole in the middle of your flowers punch one out and then thread your net through from back to front. When you've got enough to create realistic looking stamens (be generous) cut off at the back, leaving enough to be stuck to the reverse of the flower with strong tape. If you want your stamens to look a little 'frazzled' heat them very gently with your heat gun for a couple of seconds - don't overdo it as they may frizzle away completely!

So now you have flowers to add to all sorts of projects. You've already seen my 'April in Paris' card and now here's another little ATC container (which also upcycles old book pages from a charity shop).

Friday Focus - Burlap and Jute

It's FRIDAY!!!!  That means we are back focusing on a new product area, which will also be discounted 15% in The Funie Junkie Boutique for a week.  

It's Linda posting again.  I adore using textiles in my art and burlap and jute are among my favorites.  One of the main things about The Funkie Junkie Boutique is that I sell what I love to craft with.  I've hunted down various burlap styles as well as twine, several styles of jute ribbon and even burlap string. I've had a super busy week, but I  managed to put together a couple of ideas of things to do with burlap plus I'm going to share a couple of photos of past projects using the jute ribbon.  

First up is a flower of white burlap, which is about a 1 1/2" strip that I twisted and wrapped.  I made a couple of leaves, stabilizing the burlap by brushing Multi Medium Matte on the back and letting it get good and dry before I ran it through the Tattered Leaves die.  Initially, I dabbed the cut leaves with Antique Bronze Metallic Distress Stain but didn't like that it didn't give much contrast.  So I dabbed them again with Bundled Sage Distress Stain.  The antique Ball canning jar was simply wrappwd with the wide burlap ribbon from the Boutique.  I finished it with a rhinestone button and a bit of ivory burlap thread.

Another flower, also wrapped and twisted but with this one I didn't use much of a ragged edge so it is smoother than then one above.   I framed it with some vintage lace.  It's fairly large and will probably show up down the road as the centerpiece on a card.

Another large embellishment made with strips of burlap.  I cut long strips, folded them so the ends met in the center and glued them layer on layer to create a flower.  I topped this one off with one of the huge wooden coat buttons I started carrying recently plus some jute twine for a bow. 

And finally, here is a card I made last year that features both the white burlap, the ivory jute ribbon and ivory burlap thread.

Saturday Step X Step

Welcome to another Saturday Step X Step ! It's Sue here and I'm sharing a grungey style card today.

I started with the background and used Seasonal Distress Stains Ripe Persimmon, Picked Raspberry and Festive Berries.

I spritzed the card with water so that all the colours merged together.

This is what it looked like when it was dry.

 I then tore up pieces of printed tissue paper and glued it over the card.

I then gave the card a coat of watered down white acrylic paint to knock back the colour.

When it was dry I stamped over the card using the text from the Artistic Outpost Paper Boy set.

I then used the stamps from the Generation Redux set and stamped onto some masking tape, the sort you use for DIY.

For the flowers I used a technique that I spotted on Tracy Evans blog when I joined a blog hop for Creative Expressions. I've stuck the May Arts crocheted lace to some Grunge Paper. I then used the Tattered Flowers Sizzix die to cut the flowers. For the dark brown lace flower I also painted the Grunge Paper before sticking the lace to it. I forgot to take a photo of the cut flowers before I assembled them !

 

I cut a bottle cap using the mini bottle cap die and then coated it with gold acrylic paint. 

I cut a mini flourish from white card and coated it with acrylic paint too. 

I punched a circle of paper to glue onto the bottle cap and added an epoxy sticker. I stamped the main image twice, which is also from the Generation Redux set. I punched the number from the image and added it to the centre of the flower.
