Guest Designer - Carol Lee

It is time to welcome our Guest Designer for the Layers of Lace challenge. Please say hello to Carol Lee who was the overall top pick for the 'Elegant Jewels' challenge. Carol can be found on her blog, CarolinaSweetLee but more often on her Instagram page.

I am a Carolina girl. Raised in the upstate of SC, left and moved back here years ago. I have lived on both coast of the US. Went to College in Charleston,SC and stayed for many years, lived in San Diego and San Francisco CA, both for a short spell. Blessed to have had the opportunity to see far away places and love seeing how other cultures live. I have a 30 year old daughter and no 4 legged children. I work full time in the Medical field and my Art is my HAPPY! I see the little things in life and love to capture life in photos on my iPhone. I started card making with Stampin’ Up and was a demonstrator for many years. Love to upcycle and I am always bringing home treasures discarded by others. I enjoy using ephemera on my cards and in my mixed media art. I love most things Tim Holtz. I am blessed to have wonderful artsy friends that live close and other online friends that I hope to meet one day.

My imagination started flowing with ideas when I read that I would be using Lace in my design. I love lace... mostly a bit here and a bit there. I love to add to my projects that little touch of lace. When I visit far away places I often buy lace to display in my home. Where have you added lace to your life and in your art. Look around and it is probably more than you think.

A couple a years ago my art friends and I had a girls weekend in the NC Smoky Mountains and we made art flags. Lovely weekend with friends. We started with a 7x11 piece of canvas. I used some watered down patina paints and inked the canvas until I got the background I liked. We transferred images using images printed on the rough side of transparency film sheets. Paint a thin layer of thick gel medium on a piece of muslin a little larger than the image. I usually apply in both directions but not too much.Then take your transfer and put rough side down. Rub with a spoon good until image transfers.You can let sit then rub again in 5 minutes. Be gentle because too much pressure will make the image bleed. Play with this technique until it works for you. Love this process. I used the birds nest for my flag.

I layered fabric and lace until I got the look I wanted then sewed the layers together.

I added some broken necklace beads and beaded wire at the top. I love pearls added to pretty much anything. Then I added a few things from nature that I found outside our mountain house.

The stick, dried flowers and the mica I found outside. I used a piece of mica on my flag and little pieces in the bottle hanging from the top. I added the dried flowers on both sides of the stick to add that little bit of nature.

Then I added the music and a few of Tim Holtz this and that. I have this hanging in my living room which makes me think of my artsy friends and our journey and fun together. The ladies I went with made some beautiful flags as well. Planning a project when you have time with friends always adds joy and fellowship to your memories.

Saturday Showcase - Tim Holtz Number Stamps

Happy Saturday friends!  Autumn with you today to share some ideas for using the new Tim Holtz numbers stamp set, Merchant.  I've created several simple card designs to help get your wheels turning for ways you can incorporate this fabulous stamp set into your work.  First up, the always needed graduation card.  My youngest daughter will graduate next year, so I made a Class of 2019 card.  I used a couple of Christmas products with a spin.  I embossed the snowflake stamp in three different colors to make the confetti background.  I used Gold and the new Sage and Navy powders by Ranger.  These are sooooo beautiful!  Then I added a metallic bow from the Festive Greens set. 

It's always fun to highlight a special birthday year.  I used Tim's Glorious Bouquet for a subtle background.  I sponged an ombre effect with Worn Lipstick, then made a simple wrap with cardstock and gold thread.  For these cards I embossed my numbers onto a Baroque label die.  To make the mat, I cut a second piece of the same size and cut it in half.  I used wet glue to help align each half a little above and a little below the focal die.

We have lots of ten year olds in and around our home this year.  I used the largest numeral stamps to make an embellishment for this simple shaker card.  I made an ombre background with Distress Oxides, then used a texture fade to give it a pattern.  I love using DOX with my embossing folders because you can easily sand off the top of the embossed areas for contrast.

Of course, the stamp set will be perfect to commemorate each New Year.  Here I embossed Tim's new Batik stamp in gold and sponged a little Antique Linen DI on the edges.  I layered with a jeweled Prima flower and a Small Talk sticker.

I know that most of you will be using the stamps for your altered style mixed media work, but remember to break them out for other occasions, such as Valentine treats, Christmas Advent calendars, etc.  I was slightly anxious about lining up the numbers, but with the image printed on the cling foam it was a breeze.  I hope your wheels are turning with some ideas of your own now.  Happy stamping!

Surf's Up!

Hello, Friends! It's Kathy here to announce the latest challenge at Frilly and Funkie. Who's ready for a little sand, a little sun and a little surf? Let's take this challenge for a stroll beside the shore! Create a vintage or shabby chic project with a beachy theme. Use ocean colors and beach images to add a fun seaside feel to your project.

Challenge Winners - Neutral Point of View

Saturday Showcase -- She Paints Seashells By the Seashore with Tim Holtz

Welcome to this week's Saturday Showcase where we share techniques and tips using products available at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. It's Sara Emily here today, and I'm sharing some tips on how to decorate Sizzix Bigz Die w/Texture Fades - Seashells by Tim Holtz using Ranger Distress products. Hopefully I can provide a bit of inspiration for our current challenge, Surf's Up. 

 For each of these shells, I used the new Seashells Bigz die by Tim Holtz and the Texture Fade which is included. I used various papers including Distress Heavystock, Distress Watercolor Cardstock, Idea-ology Metallic Kraft Stock, Alcohol Ink Yupo Paper in white, and scraps from my stash. For most of my samples, I applied gesso to the shells before adding any products. I did not use gesso with Yupo or Metallic card, and I didn't use it for the blue shell that I used Distress ink alone to color. Most of my shells are shaped, and I did this by first spritzing the back with water, shaping and then drying with a heat tool. 

Here are the steps along with a photo collage for each set of shells pictured above, with the exception of the 'brass' and yellow shells. Things were not going well with the brass colored shell, so I thought I was going to trash it and I just forgot on the yellow one.. I will try to recreate my steps.  Remember, you can click on any image to zoom in.

Brass shell:

1. Using metallic Kraft stock, die cut shell. Sponge with Ground Espresso Distress paint. Allow to mostly dry.

2. Apply drop of Denim alcohol ink. Spritz with water and dry with heat tool.

3. Apply drop of Teakwood alcohol ink. Spritz with water and dry with heat tool.

4. Sponge with  Picket Fence Distress paint. Dry slightly with heat tool.

5. Wipe with clean cloth.

Metallic Blue shell:

1.Cut shell from silver Metallic kraft card and emboss.

2. Sponge on Picket Fence Distress paint. Drip a few drops of Denim alcohol ink and spritz with water. Heat dry.

3. Blend edges with Frayed Burlap ink.

 Yellow shell:

1. Apply Fossilized Amber Distress Oxide to gessoed shell. Do this by the 'dip and dry' method--apply oxides to mat and spritz with water. Dip your card into puddle, then dry with a heat tool. Repeat until satisfied with results.

2. Using a brush apply Worn Lipstick Oxide.

3. Blend edges with Frayed Burlap ink.

Blue shell:

1. Blend cardstock shell (no gesso) with Faded Jeans Distress ink.

2. Spritz with water and let dry or dry with heat tool.

3. Apply touches of Tattered Rose and Worn Lipstick Distress Oxide.

4. Blend with Faded Jeans and Black Soot Distress ink.

5. Scribble raised areas with Faded Jeans Distress Crayon.

1. Outline with Walnut Stain Distress Marker.

2. Blend with water pen.

3. I included a photo of the embossing process, because I wanted to mention I sometime used design tape to hold the shell in place if I was concerned about getting a perfectly aligned impression. It's also worth mentioning to be sure you are coloring the 'right side'. This is particularly important in some upcoming shells. You want to be sure you are embossing, not debossing the colored side of your shell. In some cases, I purposely debossed, for a different outcome.

4. Blend edges with Ground Espresso Distress ink.

5. Apply touches of Worn Lipstick Distress Oxide.

***My Favorites!***

 1. Color (gessoed) shell with Tattered Rose  and Worn Lipstick Distress Oxide using the dip and dry method.

2. Apply  Distress Vintage Collage Medium with a palette knife.

3. While wet, sprinkle with  Distress Glitter Dust.

4. Dry with heat tool, from a distance at first to avoid a glitter dust facial.

5. When the collage medium is dry and bubbly, apply Frayed Burlap Oxide using the dip and dry method.

6. Apply more Worn Lipstick Distress Oxide using a wet brush.

7. While the shell is still damp bend into shape.

1. Apply Tattered Rose and Worn Lipstick Distress Oxide to heavily gessoed shell using blending foam, then by dip and dry.

2. Apply Frayed Burlap Oxide by dip and dry.

3. Blend edges with Frayed Burlap ink.

4. Apply additional Worn Lipstick Oxide with brush to 'inside' of shell.

***My Second Favorites!***

1. Apply Distress Grit Paste to shells with a palette knife and allow to dry.

2. Apply Bundled Sage and Iced Spruce Oxides to the shells using dip and dry.

3. Do the same with Frayed Burlap Oxide.

4. Shape shells using a ball stylus on the Horse Conch and by pinching bottom of the scallop shell.

5. Add Worn Lipstick Oxide on inside of Conch using a brush.

6. Blend edges with Frayed Burlap ink.

1. Apply alcohol inks in Sailboat Blue and Mushroom to Yupo paper. I dribbled drops and spritzed with rubbing alcohol. I used a heat tool to move the color around. It looked like a hot mess.

2. Die cut shells and emboss.

3. Scribble with Picket Fence Distress crayon and heat set. Be careful with the heat, because Yupo acts like Shrinky Dinks when too intense heat is applied.

4. Blend edges with Ground Espresso ink.

I hope you enjoyed today's tips and will give one of them a try! Our current challenge, Surf's Up,  is open through Tuesday, May 22nd, and these shells would fit in perfectly with the theme.
