Summer Fun Interactive Gate Card

Hello friends! Happy Summer! It's Teri with TerisMailbox posting a summer fun card for The Funkie Junkie Boutique. When I think of summer, I think of glorious floral gardens. See how I put this bright and fun card together!

Card Base

The base of the card is Smooshed Distress Paints attached to an A2 white card base.  I was so happy to get my hand on the colors released from the vault! I see Wilted Violet, Prize Ribbon, Mustard Seed and Ripe Persimmon all wicking on Distress Watercolor Cardstock. I created several backgrounds at once and will be posting another video on my channel showing that process soon.

Create the Gate

Cut 1/4 inch strips from the Grey Two Tone Woodgrain Cardstock. You will need 1 thicker strip about 1/2 inch to attach to the card base. Trim two pieces at 3.25 inches. Save two longer strips for the horizontal slats. Using a mat with grids, tape two longer strips of the woodgrain cardstock 1.5 inches apart onto to the mat. 

Trim the 1/4 inch pieces to the following lengths:

2 at 3.25 inches

4 at 3.0 inches

4 at 2.75 inches 

4 at 2.5 inches.

Organize the slats in descending order.

Glue the 1/2 inch slats on the left and right, leaving at least 1/4 inch overhang. Glue the second 3.25 slats about 1/16 inch away from the first slat. Continue gluing the slats in descending order until all are attached. Glue another 1/4 inch woodgrain strip horizontally over the first two. Set aside to dry.

Once dry, trim the extra horizontal slats off. Use a score board to score the 1/2 inch slats in half. Trim the horiontal slats so a 1/4 inch gap remains at the ends. Use a strong glue to attach half of the right slat

to the back and inside of the card base so the gate overlaps.

Add the Flowers

 

If you follow me, you know I have a large stash of backgrounds. I used a variety of ink smooshed backgrounds to create the Mini Brushstroke Flowers. I made plenty of extras so I have plenty on hand for the next project!

Select a variety of colorful blooms and arrange them on the gate. I found it easier to open the gate and lay the entire base on my mat, backside of the card facing up. Once you are happy with the arrangement, use a piece of press and seal to hold the flowers in place. Note: some may not hold well due to the multiple layers.

Flip the flowers over and add glue to the back of the blooms. Add glue in corresponding areas to the gate as well. Flip the flowers over and add glue as needed to keep the blooms in place.

Stamp the Sentiment

Use your stamp positioner to add a sentiment inside the gate. I used a sentiment from Nature's Wonder, stamped with Archival Hickory Smoke Ink.

Janna's Summer Fun

Today for TFJ Inspiration Ave blog we are creating to the theme of “Summer Fun”. When I think of summer, I picture a field of sunflowers out in the bright sunlight. For me summer fun looks like quiet moments outside, reading a book or creating art. So today I will be creating a card featuring some watercolored sunflowers and a simple distress ink watercolor background.

Supplies used: Wildflower Stems #1, Distress Reinkers Rustic Wilderness, Twisted Citron, Forest Moss, Salty Ocean, Mermaid Lagoon, Mustard Seed, Fossilized Amber and Walnut Stain, Idea-ology Velvet Trim, Metallic Sticker Book and Distress Watercolor Paper, Tim Holtz Fine Detailed Water Brush, Collage Medium.

                     

To start the project I’m first going to be die cutting five flowers from the Wildflower Stems #1 set. I die cut these flowers from Mixed Media cardstock.

Next with the Distress Reinker I painted each of the flowers using the Tim Holtz Fine Detailer Water Brush. The colours that are used for the flower include Mustard Seed, Fossilized Amber and Walnut Stain. On the stems I used Rustic Wilderness and Twisted Citron.

Now, for the background. For the background, I’m going to be doing a simple wash using one of the larger Ranger Tim Holtz Collage Brushes. This will allow me to do a quick wash on our card base which is made from Distress Watercolor cardstock. For colors, I am using Rustic Wilderness, Forest Moss and Twisted Citron for the grass.

Next, I glued all of the wildflowers onto the card front with some Collage Medium. 

After gluing, I cut down the Watercolour cardstock to 5” x 3 3/4”. I also decided to layer the card with a 4.25in x5.5in piece of Worn Wallpaper and then a layer of 5.25x4in layer of Distress Heavyweight cardstock.

Now I’m going to add a piece of velvet trim around the base of the Watercolour cardstock. To attach the boat trim I used at ATG gun to add adhesive to the back of the velvet before sticking it to the card front.

                       

The last thing that I added to this card was a sentiment from the Idea-ology Metallic Sticker Book.

The first thing I did was to grab my set of  Tim Holtz Kraft Stock Papers in Warm and Cool to die cut the 'ocean life' in greens and reds/corals, then set those aside.

Next, I got out my very old (and one of my first) TH Bigz XL Tag and Bookplates Die to cut a few tags from the Cio Bella leftover sheets. (Sorry, but that is looooong retired.) There's a CLEARANCE SALE on this set, and if you love Summer...you'll love this paper. Grab some while it lasts!

On the Tag's background, which already had some cool ocean plants, I wanted some more background plants, so I stamped and embossed these out of TH Sea Life Stamp Set and used some clear embossing powder- just lightly. It would give me 3 "layers" of plant life: the paper's, my embossed, and the die cuts.

Then I took out my big OLD TH Distress Archive Inks (this was a long ago yard sale find) and stamped  some fish onto TH Cool Kraft Stock Paper. The Funkie Junkie Boutique now has a nice large selection of Distress Archival Inks and Archival Ink Refills (those would also refill this pad).

I added the Distress Oxide Uncharted Mariner to my TH 3D Folder Mosiac...

... and 'wet down' my fish with the TH (water) Sprayer, then heat dried after embossing. I then inked all around the edges of each fish, and reheat-died again...

... before adding some eyeballs to them with Glossy Accents. The balls were simple little round black beads from my stash drawer.

Then I trimmed the Garden Greens die cuts to look different from one another, and used some DO Vintage Photo and some DI in Forest Moss and Rusty Hinge around the edges for some depth to the paper.

Scor Tape came in handy with adding the mesh onion bag to the matboard (which I die cut with my Bigz XL Tag die) stretching it around the die cut tag and then putting the backs of two  matboard tags facing together. That mesh gave my tag even more texture!

I used an Easter Egg Coloring Kit's copper metal 'spoon' dipper for my hook! Who knew?! And THAT is why we crafters look at something that's normally tossed  into the recycle, knowing we just might do something with it; someday! I cut the long legs on the Large Fasteners (say that 3x really fast, lol)

to wrap them easily without the legs sticking out, for some "split buck shot sinkers".

Here's the Summer Fun: The One That Got Away!

FRONT

I made the "worm" from a twisted paper bag handle! Simply keep twisting and adding Distress Oxide Ink in Vintage Photo until it folds the way you want. I added a touch of red from one of my Ink Blenders hanging on the Spinner on my desk- which may or may not have been Fired Brick- for a slight touch of red for this "red worm". Hemp string and a couple of TH Large Fasteners made the "fishline and sinkers".

See how curvy that fish is? I added pop-dot tape under him and doubled it up in the middle for him to look like he's 3D.

BACK

Ditto on the pop-dots under these "large-mouth bass" which was my best catch this summer!

All packaged up, just like the real ones in my freezer, awaiting another Fish Fry with our Besties!

Suzz's Fave Tim Holtz Products

Hi!  Suzz here!  What a challenge... There are many different things that Tim has inspired over the  years.  I just picked a handful of different products to use that are all my favorites! 

I started with Ranger Distress Inks and Stain Sprays.  What is not to love about the distress products from Ranger and the fabulous colors that they have inspired! 

I spritzed, dragged ink on the craft mat and then spritzed it to pick up the spots and the variations and flicked more ink on the background.

I love that you can use scraps of cardstock to pick up the excess ink left over from other projects.

After the inky backgrounds were created I stamped some backgrounds using archival inks and then embossed with gold and brown embossing powders.  

Then I dug out some of the very pretty transparent layers to accent the backgrounds.  I attached them and used fun embellishments to clip on the sentiments.  The Stampers Anonymous Tiny Text stamps are always out on my desk and probably get the most love of my stamps!

Lisa's Fave Tim Holtz Product

Hello, Lisa Hoel here! Our new focus theme is "use your favorite Tim Holtz product". (Like I could choose just one thing – impossible!) Therefore I have used various Distress medias, stamps, dies and stencils to create a Card Caddy full of notecards. (They are all my favorite ha ha.)

Mixed media is the best! All the goodies play so nicely together…

I made a set of ten cards to fit into the Card Caddy holder.

Let's take a look at how I made them:

Step 1 – I created backgrounds to cut up into card fronts. First I used Distress Sprays to lay down some color onto cardstock.

I added a secondary layer of visual texture with stencils.

Step 2 – I chopped the pages up into card fronts before adding more stamping and texture. Meanwhile, I had also cut the card bases and mats (from Kraft Stock Sparkle Classic – it added some nice bling to the cards).

Step 3 – I set the card bases off to the side and continued on with adding more to the fronts. Stamped texture went on first. Using the set of Everyday Art Element Stencils and Distress Embossing Dabber, I then added Distress Glazed accents. 

I adhered the die cut 

Step 4 – The Card Caddy Die (currently 50% off!) is a cinch to put together. I cut the pieces out of Sizzix mat board and then inked them. The tabs fold on the score lines and I glued it all together with a strong, quick grab liquid glue. (Clothespins are great for holding the tabs in place while the glue is drying.)
