Collage Backgrounds with Dina Wakley Media

Hi everyone and welcome to another Saturday Showcase, the Design Team's chance to share tutorials and products available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique with you. Today I have a couple more Parisian inspired journal pages to share with you together with a tutorial for creating collage backgrounds using Dina Wakley Media stamps, stencils, paints and gessos. I have used these collage backgrounds to draw architectural images onto but you could easily add flowers, faces or anything else that takes your fancy on to them.

So here's the first of two journal pages, this one featuring my take on the Arc de Triomphe;

The collage background begins with scraps of paper, torn into small pieces and layered together in a patchwork with matte gel medium.

If you don't have much in the way of patterned paper or pieces with text on don't worry because this can be added through using Dina Wakley Media Collage Paper and stencils. I used bits from the 'Elements' collection which are easily torn and applied, again with gel medium; the tissue is great because it is sturdy but thin enough to allow lower layers to show through. For me, I find it looks better if you keep everything in a horizontal/vertical plane rather than just adding patterned pieces at any angle but this is of course personal preference.

The 'Marks' stencil coordinates perfectly with the collage paper collection and I used some 'Black' Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint with it to add the chosen pattern elements onto the background.

As mentioned earlier there is no need to worry if you don't have much in the way of paper with text on it because you can use stamps to add them. I took a couple of the phrases from the Dina Wakley Media 'Ledger Girls' stamp set and stamped them onto the collage background with permanent black ink.

To even out the background you then need to use a brayer or palette knife to apply a thin uneven layer of white gesso all over it. You may also want to add a layer of clear gesso over the whole background to ensure the various surfaces react in a similar way to additional layers of paint/ink etc. I also dabbed a used teabag over the surface to stain the surface lightly, giving it a more vintage feel in keeping with the other pages in my journal.

You can see below where I created a similar collage background in the same way for my second journal page - at this point I hadn't added the gesso layers or tea stained it.

I then sketched my drawing of the Arc de Triomphe onto the background, painting it in with white gesso before adding back the missing lines. You could use a stamping platform to do the same thing with one of your stamps.

Layers of 'Sedona' Acrylic Paint, 'Lapis' Scribble Stick and 'White' Acrylic Paint, all from the Dina Wakley Media range, were used to add colour to the image. I drew the details back in with a black Stabillo All pencil and highlighted some of them with a gold pen before adding some asemic writing along one edge. Dina Wakley has a really helpful free video tutorial showing how to do all of this over on Jeanne Oliver's website HERE.

As part of the finishing touches texture paste was applied through the 'Marks' stencil in one corner of the page and I sprinkled gold embossing powder over some of it, waiting until the paste was dry before heat setting the powder. Lace trims were added over the top along with hand stitching and some words - again you could embellish your collage with trims and words from your stash or even use the ones in the 'Ledger Girls' set if appropriate.

On the second side of the page I've added a gel transfer print showing the view from directly beneath the Eiffel Tower - it is fascinating to see the structure in all its complexity this way.

Saturday Showcase - Ranger Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink Alloys

Welcome to the Saturday Showcase featuring the beautiful Alloy Alcohol Inks! In celebration of the new sizes I thought why not share some inspiration for these beautiful inks.

 

I created two different projects and tried to highlight all the different  uses with the alcohol inks. 

I usually have a hard time covering up the backgrounds because they have such lovely color and movement.

To create this type of background I usually spend a lot of time dripping and layering the alcohol inks. The effect always turns out different every time and can be influenced by the paper you use as well as the time you wait between the layers.

 

I started by putting a large amount of alcohol blending solution on a 8 1/2 x 11" sheet of white Yupo paper. I then dripped on wild plum and sterling. I smeared it all together and let it dry. Sometimes I like to start with a color. I could have started with just the blending solution and leave the white background.

Next I dripped straight onto the dry background the sterling alloy. You can do smaller or bigger drips depending on what effect you want to achieve.

While the background is still wet, I dripped the plum color over the sterling spots and around them.

Next comes the blending solution again to help blend and weaken the colors.

 

I came back and dripped more of the plum into the sterling and blending solution. The metallic alloy has this effect of starting to break up into smaller pieces which is a cool effect.

 

You can continue to drip and blend. I also will take the foam pad with just blending solution and dab it to cause little bubbles of lighter colors into the mix. I didn't on this background because I wanted the metals to break up and be more of a little bits.

My other background on the card ended up like this:

On this background I used both Sterling and Foundry. I also kept letting it dry and coming back. I applied a bit of heat to make the metal bubble up while drying. You have to be careful on the Yupo paper as it will melt and buckle up if you heat it directly. You need to keep the heat gun further away to make sure you don't cause it to buckle.

I loved the metallic alloy and decided to apply it to various surfaces.

I sponged it onto some die cuts of white cardstock and onto paper flowers. It gave a lovely gray edge to the flowers and leaves. It also gave a beautiful metallic sheen to the die cut leaves. 

 

Next I took a few Idea-Ology pieces that were a lovely bronze color and modified them to go with my project.

 

I first sponged on Sterling Alcohol Ink and then directly dripped it onto the surface in places.  It gave it a lovely Patina.

 

I wondered how it would apply over a wood background. I put drops of the Sterling onto my felt piece and then added drips of Blending Solution to make it more translucent. I then sponged it onto the wood surface. I didn't cover it completely. I came back multiple times using just the blending solution to take some of the silver away from the surface. I also used a baby wipe in areas to sponge off the color.

After I finished all my pieces I assembled them onto the background.

Welcoming New DT Members and Sad Goodbyes

Hi everyone and welcome. After an extended break we are back with a new look Design Team and lots of new challenges to look forward to over the coming months, starting with the first one tomorrow, Wednesday, May 19th.

Before all of that we are really sad to say goodbye to two of our long serving DT members, Cec Wintonyk and Sara Emily Barker. They have been such valued team mates who have been such a huge, important part of the team, and over the years they have also become such good friends. We will miss them so much and want to thank them for everything.

It is Cec here and I am just popping in to welcome the new members of the Design Team and say goodbye to all of you.  I was thrilled when Linda invited me to join this team in 2013 and I have enjoyed it thoroughly for all these years.  I am so grateful for her confidence in me and her generosity.  It is always so much fun to open up a package from The Funkie Junkie Boutique and find a little extra package.  Thank you Linda, it has been quite a ride.

While we have been on this break I have been playing with some different art and doing some online workshops.  It was during this time that I came to the decision that it was time for me to move on.  I am looking forward to having fun in my studio and using up some of my stash so I have room for new supplies 😀

I have been honoured to serve with a great group of very wonderful creators during my time on the team and still keep in touch with many.  I will definitely miss working beside Jenny, Sara Emily and Suzz - their talent has pushed me to be a better creator myself and they have taught me a lot.  Most importantly, who knew that I would get a BFF at this stage of my life but Jenny has become just that and I am so thankful to have her in my life.

I also want to acknowledge all the ladies that had the opportunity to be Guest Designers.  It was lovely getting to know so many of you in my role as the Guest Designer Coordinator and I enjoyed all our friendly email chats as we worked through the process.

Welcome to the new gals on the team and I hope you enjoy being here as much as I have.  I can't wait to see what you all create and to check out your blogs and social media pages.  I expect to be inspired and that might just encourage me to enter a challenge from time to time to show you that I haven't fallen off the face of the earth.

Hi! I am Laura and I am so happy to be a part of the Funkie Junkie Design Team. I am a work at home mom to 2 fantastic and fun loving young men – Cody is 20 and just graduated college and Ty is 19 and works as a welder. I am happily married for 21 years to my best friend and awesome husband, Jon. He is hardworking, ambitious, determined and loving…I am creative, enthusiastic, emotional and passionate – together we make a great team! We own our own transport truck and he is a long haul driver so during the week, It is me and our boys, our two fur babies and my scrappy stuff!!!

I started scrapping years ago when my sister took me to a Creative Memories beginner class and I really enjoyed it, I just wasn’t a Creative Memories scrapper and soon struck out on my own. I found a few very helpful and friendly sites on the web and have been trying new things and learning ever since. I really enjoy trying new things and creating projects! I create mostly 12×12 layouts but I do really enjoy creating off the page projects, cards and canvases…anything where I can ink and paint and play and get my hands messy! My family is the focus of my life, my inspiration, and my motivation to scrapbook.

Born and raised in California, I have been a mid-westerner most of my life. I consider myself a life-long crafter. An educator at heart, I retired from a career that is also one of my passions – Health Education. I now use that love of education to share the joy of cardmaking techniques.

I am currently on the Design Team for The Funkie Junkie Boutique, CutCardstock, TaylorMadeDesigns4U and A Blog Named Hero. I am a Certified Educator with Altenew where I also Guest Design. An active blogger, I post my designs on social media as Teris Mailbox. Floral stamps and dies are a favorite for my, but I enjoy many techniques including mixed media projects, watercoloring and working with Distress Ink products. I admit to being a Tim Holtz addict.

Hello! My name is Tera Callihan. I'm Ohio born and raised with day dreams of moving to the Carolinas some day. My husband and I were high school sweet hearts. We have been together 18 years, married for 12 this year. We have 5 fur children (1 dog and 4 cats). I'm a Dental Hygienist my day and rubber stamp/craft addict by night.

My style can be a bit all over, I am a Tim Holtz addict. I love vintage, grunge, shabby chic and masculine art. I also love all things strange medical and or creepy Halloweeny. I like occasional brighter and odd art as well. I design rubber stamps for Stampotique Originals as well as being on there DT. Mail art is one of my favorite forms of art, and I tent to rotate through other types.

Design Team Call for The Funkie Junkie Blog

During our blog's Spring Break, we are doing a some refreshing of our team and design styles.  We are expanding the team and looking for fresh new inspiration.  We have several openings for designers to join our team.  

We are looking for paper crafters with a fresh, new approach to join our amazing Design Team! Each of our designers provides an inspiration project for our Blog Challenge every two weeks, in addition to providing a detailed photo tutorial showcasing a product or technique every six weeks. Applicants must have a solid social media presence with a blog, Facebook page and Instagram postings. We require that your inspiration project be posted to your social media with links back to our store, The Funkie Junkie Boutique. We also ask that you display our The Funkie Junkie Boutique Design Team badge on your personal blog and Facebook page. In return, we provide a small bi-monthly shopping allowance for supplies and an additional discount on purchases made at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.
