Welcome to today's Guest Designed, Shilpa!

Today we welcome Shilpa of Neon Diary as our Guest Designer. Shilpa was the DT winner of the 'All About Wendy' challenge and was therefore invited to join us for a Guest Designer spot.

So, let's move on to hear from Shilpa!


Hello everyone, Shilpa here. I am super excited and honoured to be invited as a Guest designer at Frilly and Funkie. Thank you so much Frilly and Funkie Design Team for choosing my journal page as a winner at 'All about Wendy' challenge.

I live in a beautiful city, Bangalore, India. I am a SAHM to a teenage daughter. I am a Mixed Media Artist and I also love to play in my Art Journal with lots of colour and other art mediums every now and then. I've been doing paintings for years and love to play with colours. I started making handmade cards ten years ago, I got introduced to Mixed Media a couple of years ago and am addicted to it now. I love to try new techniques and new products and share with my fellow crafters/ artists. My blog's name is 'Neon Diary'.


I started with Tim Holtz tissue wrap. I attached it to white card stock. I cut out Poinsettia diecuts and adhered them randomly. I applied gel medium on them and sprinkled Rock Candy Distress glitter on to it. I used Distress Stains and Distress Paints to bring on the festive colours. When it dried completely I applied Vintage Photo and Tea Dye Distress Inks at the edges. I've chosen Tim Holtz Kraft Core shattered card stock as a base.


I created texture on same green craft core paper with Tim’s Faded Bubbles Alterations embossing folder. Used my distressing tool to reveal kraft color underneath.


I've used the Cherry Lyn poinsettia die to make the poinsettia, the Memory Box die to make the wonderful bauble and the Spellbinders die for the leaves. The charm is from Tim's Idea-Ology Christmas adornments. And when I put everything together… my card was ready.

Friday Focus with Tim Holtz Stencils

Welcome to my FIRST Friday Focus with the Frilly and Funkie Team!  This Friday Focus is all about Tim Holtz Stencils. If you're new to my style I'm all about techniques, combining products and I'm a Timmy Girl.  Here I get to show off my love of my Tim Holtz Stencils (I own them all) and a couple of ways to create with them.  Stencils are so versatile.  Each stencil is capable of many techniques.  I'll show you 5 ways to use a couple stencils with mini tutorials.
Stenciling though with Alcohol Inks and Festive Stencil.


Ink Glossy Paper with alcohol inks watermelon and meadow using a twisting motion.


Layer the stencil over the glossy paper put some alcohol blending solution on a sponge and sponge it through.  Wait a few moments, then repeat.  Do this 3-4 times.  The effect is so pretty.


Create Texture with the Festive Stencil and Embossing Paste.


This is an easy technique used by many.  Layer embossing paste on cardstock and dry.  I sprayed with Distress Spray Stains Fired Brick and Evergreen Bough.


Sentiments and Embossing Paste with Christmas Stencil


I inked cardstock with distress stains picket fence, tumbled glass and broken china and dry.  Pick your words and use embossing paste to create texture.  Oops, forgot to take that photo.


Create your own Resist with the Christmas Stencil. 
Then I inked the Stacked Presents with more stencils.


I layered the Christmas Stencil over some white cardstock then pressed the embossing ink pad through the stencil. 


When the embossing ink is evenly distributed emboss with clear embossing powder and dry.  I sprayed with distress spray stains evergreen bough and peeled paint.


The spray stain resists the embossed stenciled Christmas words creating your own resist background.


Embossing with the Festive Stencil.  Like a texture fade.


You can emboss with your stencils.  By sandwiching your plates and adding the impressions pad and silicon rubber mat you can create an embossed image with your stencil.


It's best to use your larger pattern stencils to emboss.  Add some distress ink festive berries and peeled paint to get that texture to pop. 


The Christmas and Festive Stencils used 5 ways.


All 5 Christmas Cards came out so different using 5 techniques and stencils.
