Saturday Showcase - Sizzix Chapter 2 Crochet & Dina Wakley Blank Media Tape

Hi, Suzz here!  Today I am sharing another Saturday Showcase!  I just acquired the beautiful Sizzix Tim Holtz Chapter 2 Crochet dies and couldn't wait to try them out!  I decided to pair the crochet dies with the Dina Wakley Blank Media tape and create a few different projects.

I love the ability to create different bits of lacy edges and strips of design tape that coordinates with whatever I am working on.

Steps to create:

1. Emboss strings background using layering stencil and texture crackle embossing paste.
2. While the embossing paste is still wet spray a mix of distress oxide ink sprays over the background.
3.  Let background dry.
4.  Pick up the excess ink with linen strips.
5.  Die cut crochet from vellum. Sponge with brown distress ink.
6.  Cut strips of blank media tape and tape to craft mat.
7.  Paint strips of media tape with white gesso.
8.  Sponge distress ink over dried gesso blank tape.
9.  Stamp music score over sponged background.  Heat set the ink and distress ink.
10. Stamp bird onto white cardstock.  Paint with waterbrush and watercolors.
11. Cut bird out.
12. Tie twigs together with jute.
12. Assemble card.
13. Flick watered down white paint over entire surface.

After I created the first card I had plenty of bits and pieces from my first card and went on to create this card:

Steps:

1.  Using one of the die cut crochet pieces as a stencil.  Lay the lace onto white cardstock and sponge with brown die ink.  Repeat until background is covered.
2.  Die cut butterfly from pattern paper.  Add some splotching and embossing with gold embossing paste.
3.  Die cut crochet lace from paper towels. (It gives it a clothe like feel and very cool effect!)
4.  Paint the paper towel lace with watercolor paints.  After dries add additional sponging of dark brown ink.
5.  Paint blank media tape with white gesso.  Let dry.
6.  Paint vellum paper and media tape with a mix of watercolor.  (Pink/Brown)
7.  Paint Linen with white gesso.  Let dry.
8.  Paint Linen with mix of watercolors.  (Pink/Brown)
9.  Assemble card.

After that I played with all the pieces of media tape that were painted with white gesso.

First I painted a strip with watercolors.  They blended together with such pretty bright colors.

This was a sponged background with stamped images. If you don't heat set the stamped archival ink it will smear and blend.
I sprayed the next set with distress oxide ink sprays.  It was very pretty but very soft in color.  I decided to heat set the color and then applied versamark over the entire surface.   Then I heat embossed the surface with clear embossing powder.  It enriched the colors and gave a glossy finish.

For my final media tape pieces I painted the surface first with the gesso.  Let the gesso dry.  Then I embossed with embossing paste through a stencil.  While it was wet I sprayed it with Iced Spruce Distress Oxide spray and let that dry.  I then sponged a bit of gold ink over the raised surface.

Well I hope this has you inspired to play with laces and tapes!

There is still time to join the "It Looks Real" challenge! You have until midnight on November 5th!

  2. The little crocheted nest is so sweet, and I love how it looks used as a stencil too. That's an adorable postcard - the butterfly body is genius! The tape is really great - I love the Oxide version, so cool, and the paste version too. So many different ideas to play with, thank you.

    1. I think it's a flat washi style tape - here's the link to a video where Dina Wakley talks about it; https://youtu.be/ptOplXTkBqg

    2. Thanks Jenny! It is like a masking tape. I isn't woven. I could have stamped on it directly but liked the white background and how the gesso softens the effect. :)

    1. PS I meant to say also, the way you colored the bird makes him so realistic and he pops right off that textured background.
