Friday Focus: Maja and Pion Design Papers!

Hello and welcome to the the Frilly and Funkie Blog! It's Nancy here. I'm joining you today for the Friday Focus. We're featuring paper collections from Maja Design and Pion Design, both of which are available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique with an extra 15% discount through January 21st!

I have a bit of an addiction to these papers. In truth, I can't get enough of them. I'm thrilled to present a sampling of these lovely papers with two 'all occasion' cards, each made from one of the paper collections. It was quite an adventure getting these cards ready. First my sewing machine broke, then my computer had a virus and was in the shop a couple of days, but in the end it all worked out:-))

The first card is made with Pion Design's Paris Flea Market collection (one of my favorites). Their delicate, double sided papers and images add a romantic touch to everything you create! These are a lighter weight papers that layer wonderfully. I mount them on light weight chipboard or heavy weight cardstock for added sturdiness.

After lightly distressing the edges of the paper, I layered and stitched everything together. I used this gorgeous image from the paper collection as the focal point, popping it up with foam tape.

There area a total of four layers on the front of this card, plus the florals. Prima pearls were added to both sides of the card at the top and bottom. .

The large blooming rose was created using Tim Holtz Tattered Florals dies. I'll add the link for the tutorial for these roses at the bottom of this post. My usual bow wasn't working out with this card, so I added a soft twine fringe instead.

Below is a view of the layers from the top of the card.

The second card is crafted from Maja Design's Vintage Summer Basics collection. Maja's double sided papers are shabby, feminine perfection! This particular collection is one of my go-to paper pads. I've been playing with these papers in my craft room the last couple of weeks, making roses in different styles.

For this card I started by distressing, layering and stitching my papers. Since my first card was blue, I wanted this one to be pink.

Maja Design manufactures a heavier weight paper, making them quite sturdy. It gives great contour and dimension when distressing and creating flowers. This blooming rose was created using the same technique as the first card. I had the same issue with my bow on this card. It just didn't seem to fit properly, so I decided on this twine fringe to soften things up.

Below is a view of the layering from the top of the card. This card also has four layers, plus the floral spray.

The tags were created using images from the paper collection. They are distressed and popped up with foam tape. You may have noticed I squished a couple of my liquid pearl drops. Let me be a cautionary tale ~ never handle your card before you are absolutely certain they are set.

The tutorial for the blooming rose can be found here: Blooming Rose Tutorial
To make the roses as large as the ones on these cards, just add extra layers of petals.

Thank you so much for joining me today! It's been a pleasure sharing these beautiful papers with you. While you're here you should stop by and check out our latest challenge. There is still plenty of time to play along with us! Don't forget to head on over to the The Funkie Junkie Boutique  to stock up during this fabulous sale. That's where I'm headed. You may want to get there before I do...

Hugs,

Today's Guest Designer

It is time to introduce our Guest Designer for this challenge.  Please join us in welcoming Nicola (a.k.a. Paper Profusion), the winner of the challenge called An Altered State.

"Hello. I'm Nicola (aka Paper Profusion) and I'm truly delighted to feature again as a guest designer at Frilly & Funkie - one of my very favourite blogs for top notch inspiration and education.

I live in Dublin, Ireland. I’ve loved handicrafts for as long as I can remember, probably inspired by my Mum who excelled at every single crafting technique out there. From very young I was an avid knitter and always enjoyed learning crafts especially those involving paper. I’m now medically retired however during my ‘career / good health years’ my main creative hobby was photography - especially travel/wildlife related. During a time of serious illness, I became hooked on paper crafting as it gave me an outlet to a home based hobby that I could dabble in, at my own pace. I’m particularly drawn to the vintage / shabby chic genres usually adding lots of embellishments and ribbon.

I'm so pleased that Cec's Challenge theme is 'Sing, Sing, Sing'. Coming straight after Christmas it can be hard to get crafting again but this theme made it easy. My card features a bird singing it's heart out with plenty of musical allusions in the form of pattern, stamping and embellishments. You can find out more over at my blog. In the meantime, huge thanks to all the über talented team at Frilly & Funkie for inviting me to guest design today."

Thank you Nicola for such a fabulous make for our 'Sing, Sing, Sing' challenge.  If you want to join in too there is still lots of time.  The challenge runs until 11:55 Eastern Time on Tuesday, January 26th 2016 so click here to go to the challenge and share your musical project.

Holiday Hues

Hello Everyone!! Pamellia here and I am hosting our very last challenge of 2015 (and the very first of 2016!) here at Frilly and Funkie. It's been a wonderful year full of shabby chic and vintage projects with all sorts of amazing themes and I have chosen the theme HOLIDAY HUES for this one. I would like to see your favourite colours for your favourite holiday. Choose whatever holiday you like, just make sure your project is shabby chic or vintage in style.

The team will choose their top four picks with the winner being invited to join us in a Guest DT spot here at Frilly and Funkie and the next three will receive badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

The guidelines for entering are simple; create a new vintage or shabby chic project following the challenge theme, link it below to your post (not just your blog) and also include a link back to this challenge in your post. You can combine our challenge with up to 10 challenges (including this one) to be in with a chance of winning. Make sure you follow these rules as unfortunately we have had to eliminate entrants from the prize draws in the past when they have entered too many other challenges. If you are entering through a public forum please use keyword F&F. Also, please be sure to turn off your Word Verification so our Design Team can leave comments on your blogs.

Here are the amazing creations from the Funkie team!

Saturday Step X Step - Altered Playing Card

Hello, Cec here and I am bringing you a simple Step X Step.  With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I decided something less elaborate was in order as we all get back into our craft rooms so I am going to show you an altered playing card that I made.  Sorry about the quality of the photos but it couldn't decide if it wanted to be sunny or dreary here the day I did this so I got some reflection from my desk lamps on some of them.

I started with the Joker from a very old deck of cards.  I altered both sides of the card but I am only going to show you one side in my photos.  The other side has all the same elements but the placement is slightly different.

Even when I mess up or have extras, I hang on to them because you never know when they might come in handy.  From my pile, I chose this bright yellow mottled piece that I made by dabbing Wild Honey and Squeezed Lemonade Distress Ink on my kraft mat, spritzing it with water and then dragging the card stock through it.  I adhered it to both sides of the playing card.  Tip:  Adhere one side first and when it is dry trim around the card, then repeat with the other side - it makes it much easier to see where you need to trim.

Next I added some texture paste through a TCW Mini Harlequin stencil.  You will notice in the remaining photos that even though the background had been sitting around probably for months the texture paste still sucked up some of the colour from the background since it was made with Distress Inks.

The next step was to do some stamping using Wendy Vecchi's Tree Branch Archival Ink.  I used a piece of the Wendy Vecchi Large Collage Background stamp and I also used some of Wendy Vecchi's Watering Can Archival Ink with a music stamp from a 7 Gypsies set called Vintage.

I inked the edges with some Rusty Hinge DI.

I cut hearts from a scrap of corrugated cardboard in that pile and inked the edges with some Walnut Stain DI.  The cardboard had already been highlighted with some white paint.

Next I glued a couple butterflies from Tim Holtz Tissue Wrap (Melange) to a scrap piece of card stock and inked them with Rusty Hinge DI and then fussy cut them.  After they were cut, I decided to add some Festive Berries DI with a water brush.  I forgot to take a photo of that but you will see it in the finished project.

The butterflies were then adhered to the hearts and added to the card with a loop of burlap underneath.

Finally I added some pearls and a Tim Holtz Chit Chat sticker that I inked with Walnut Stain DI.

I don't create very fast but altering playing cards can be done so quickly and they are such fun to do so I hope you will give them a try.
