Guest Designer - Sara Emily Barker

Today we welcome our Guest Designer for the 'Tag It' challenge. Say welcome back to our former team mate Sara Emily Barker who was the Design Team's top pick from the 'Fall Gratitude' challenge.

(Sara Emily is the one without the hat!)

Hi! It’s Sara Emily from sarascloset. I’m thrilled to be back at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog as this week’s Guest Designer. Some may remember that I had the honor and privilege of being a member of the Design Team for almost three years. I enjoy all sorts of arts and crafts, but especially love to experiment with my mixed media supplies to find new ways combine and use them.

In keeping with Teri’s challenge, “Tag It”, I chose to use up some of my old Tim Holtz Christmas Paper Stash scraps and paired them with a few new to me Tim Holtz dies and stamps to make some simple swing tags.

My tags are so quick and easy to make but look pretty on a package wrapped in plain kraft paper, tucked under the tree.

Please drop by my blog to see each of my tags up close and pick up a few tips to make some quick and easy tags of your own. I’m looking forward to seeing all your wonderful festive tags!

Oh aren't these tags fantastic and what a wonderful way to dress up kraft wrapping (which could even be recycled!) They truly are perfect for the current challenge. Thank you Sara Emily for being our latest Guest Designer. Make sure you check out her blog to see a more detailed tutorial. Then come on back and share your 'Tag It' projects with us.

The challenge can be found HERE and runs through 11:55 pm EST on Tuesday, November 30th.

Saturday Showcase - Prima Finnabair Stencils and Waxes Backgrounds

Hi everyone and welcome to another Saturday Showcase, the Design Team's chance to share tutorials featuring some of the products available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique with you. Today I'm sharing an idea for using Prima Finnabair Stencils and some of the waxes from their Art Alchemy range to create backgrounds for cards.

The backgrounds start with a neutral background made using a layer of Dina Wakley Media 'Buff' Paint and White Gesso on a large sheet of mixed media card. When dry sand back the surface to give it an aged worn look. I then cut the card into smaller pieces that would fit onto A6 card blanks.

Using one of the Prima Finnabair Stencils (in this case 'Ghostwriter') apply Dina Wakley Media 'Sand' Paint through it across one of the background pieces. Then when dry move the stencil a little diagonally and apply some dimensional paste through it. When dry this gives the effect of a drop shadow.

Leaving the stencil in place apply one of the Prima Finnabair waxes through it onto the dried paste. Below you can see where one has had the 'Old White' Matte Wax used and the other, the 'French Lavender' Matte Wax.

To make it easier to create the focal point of the card cut a tag from kraft card using one of the tags from Eileen Hull Designs 'Card, Waterfall & Tags' Die Set. Dry brush the tag with one of the Dina Wakley Media Paints.

When each of the backgrounds has been created mount them on coordinating Metallic Kraft Stock. You can also team them up with the matching tags.

Now it's time to pull out those scraps and offcuts from previous projects; team mate Suzz came up with a clever idea to organise them into colour groups so it makes it easier to choose what will work with each background. In amongst these are gel plate prints on thin paper and tissue.

You can draw attention to the focal point on your card by adding a piece of gel printed tissue or collage paper to your background using a soft gel medium.

Finally gather your die cuts, stamped images and card offcuts and add them to the tag; this will help you to create that focal point in a restricted space that can then be added on top of the background.

Here is the first of the finished cards; this one includes the 'Book of Numbers' Stencil with the 'White Pearl' Metallic Wax on the background with stamped/die cut flowers from Wendy Vecchi's 'Bravo' Stamp Die Stencils set.

The second card is the one from the 'Living Things' challenge; this one includes the 'Ghostwriter' Stencil with the 'Old White' Matte Wax on the background.

The third card has an Autumnal feel with the 'Victorian Tiles' Stencil used in conjunction with 'Rusty Red' Matte Wax and a bunch of different die cut leaves and Wendy Vecchi orange flower.

The fourth card includes the 'Machinery' Stencil in the background, teamed with 'Charcoal Black' Matte Wax. The spoon and teabag come from an older Eileen Hull Designs Die.

On the fifth card you can see how a different coloured wax can change the look of the 'Victorian Tiles' Stencil; this time it's been covered in 'Faded Denim' Matte Wax and has some simple red fabric hearts added to compliment it.

For the last of the cards we return to the 'Book of Numbers' Stencil which this time has the delicate 'French Lavender' Matte Wax on top. Stamps with small birthday sayings on them are included in Wendy Vecchi's 'Birthday Bash' Stamp, Die, Stencil set.

Thanks for stopping by to see today's showcase. I hope you've enjoyed seeing how to create these birthday cards using the Prima Finnabair Stencils and Art Alchemy Waxes for backgrounds.

There's still time to enter the current Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog challenge 'Tag It' which runs through Tuesday, November 30th at 11.55pm. We look forward to seeing your creations.

Jenny

Guest Designer - Alice K

Today we welcome our Guest Designer for the 'Living Things' challenge. Say hello to Alice K (Yellow House Studio) who was the Design Team's top pick from the 'Chalk It Up' challenge.

Hello, I am Alice K. I have been crafting all my life, starting with crayons at an early age and working my way into mixed media in my more mature years. I mostly make Artist Trading Cards (ATC), but have veered into greeting cards lately. My recent love is die cutting and building small scenes with them. You can visit my blog at yellowhousestudio.blogspot.com

This is my guest project for Funkie Junkie Challenge Blog for the Living Things, where I was recently honored to have been chosen as the Top Pick. My project combines my love for die cuts and painting my own substrates.

I do love a good walk in the woods. At this time of year when the leaves are almost all down it's easy to spot the squirrels chasing up and down the tree trunks. I was overjoyed to find this squirrel stamp recently, and inspired to make a card to send apropos of nothing, inspired by my walks.

The leaves were die cut from several papers that I had painted with Distress Oxides. I added some silver thread around them as well as a few 'dew drops' (aka clear glue). The sentiment is stamped and then embossed with orange red and reads 'It is lovely life'.

How perfect that Alice found that squirrel stamp to make her beautiful card! Thank you Alice for your wonderful inspiration and for being our latest Guest Designer. Make sure you check out her blog to see more of her creations. Then come on back and share your shimmering 'Living Things' projects with us.

The challenge can be found HERE and runs through 11:55 pm EST on Tuesday, November 16th.

Congratulations to Sherry on winning an opportunity to be a Guest Designer at a future date here at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog. You will be contacted shortly with all the details.

Saturday Showcase - Stampers Anonymous Holiday Things & Cozy Christmas

Hi! Suzz here with the Saturday Showcase. I was so excited to go to the mailbox and find my latest package of goodies from The Funkie Junkie Boutique! They included the Stampers Anonymous Holiday Things and Cozy Christmas stamps.

I spent some time creating tags and ATC's using the mini images from the Holiday Things and the sweet sentiments from Cozy Christmas.

I started with stamping the background of a tag with some of the pretty pine branches with the olive dye ink. I had the adorable peppermints to use as berries that went with the pretty pine cones.

Next up I pulled some pretty Christmas paper to make the beautiful star shine.

The star was stamped with versamark ink and then embossed with a shiny silver. The die cut branches got the same treatment to give it a shiny backdrop over the charming paper.

I then had to play with the new distress ink Villainous Poison. I spritzed some water on a dab of the distress oxide on my craft map. Lovely streaks of purple formed the basis for my deer tag.

After the background dried the deer and tree were stamped along with the sentiment. The stars were drawn on with white gel pen.

For my final ATC I mixed in a bird from the previous holiday stamps along with the branches and berries.

They were stamped with distress inks and colored with watercolor pencils.  The bird stopped by to help deck the halls!

There is plenty of time to play in the new Living Things challenge!
Happy Stamping!

Suzz
