Guest Designer - Lyla Larimore

It is time to say hello and welcome back to Lyla Larimore who is our Guest Designer for the With This Ring challenge.  Lyla can be found on her blog A Chief's Wife's Heart's aFire and was the winner of the Positively Pensive challenge.

Hey, everyone!

I’m happy to be back as Guest Designer once again here at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Challenge Blog!

I’m one of those ‘chatty’ people who happens to like playing with paper, scissors, glue, and anything labeled “Tim Holtz”. 😊

This assignment was a very sweet deal for me; “With This Ring” fit into the month- right along with our 36

We also just happened to have 2 weddings of children we consider to be family- the kids of 2 of our sets of Besties.

Strangely enough- both are children of Dads who were our own church Ministers, although only one of them was performing the actual ceremony. And one of the kids was featured in the very project that won me this Guest Designer spot!

So it was fitting to make this Challenge’s project as part of their gifts.

Come on by and take a roller-coaster ride (as marriage can be) along with me on my blog and see how I made these cuties.

If you haven’t created something for “With This Ring” yet, you still have a few days left!

Don't forget to check out Lyla's post to see how she made her adorable paper dolls and then come on back and share your wedding creation with us.  The challenge runs through 11:55 pm EDT on Tuesday, August 4th and can be found HERE.

Saturday Showcase - Stampers Anonymous Flower Shop + Glorious Garden

Happy Saturday!  Suzz here with the next Saturday Showcase!

I am highlighting two different Stampers Anonymous Stamp sets the Glorious Garden and the Flower Shop.  My daughter has been asked to be a bridesmaid in a few weddings this summer which inspired me to create a few different wedding cards using these stamp sets.

I love how versatile the flower stamps are for summer weddings.  You can stamp them in different colors, use different portions of the stamp, and add color to coordinate.

Stampers Anonymous Glorious Garden For The Funkie Junkie Boutique

I played with stamping the Glorious Garden on this one using the Watering Can ink and added a touch of color with watercolor pencils and a water brush.  I stamped the sentiment with a soft pink and a touch of the gray over the pink ink.

After I finished I sprinkled it with a splattering of the Seth Apter Inkz spray to add a shimmer.  The twine is accented with a ladybug gem.

Next up I tried the same idea but used the lovely green ink to stamp everything.
I added just a hint of neutral watercolors to the flowers.  This actually is the color of the bridesmaids dresses and fit the style of the wedding.  I finished this card with tiny dew drops.  I used glossy accents and added dew drops randomly over the surface.  I made some larger drops and some smaller.  It is a tiny touch that adds an unexpected result.

I wanted to try another version of this with more coloring and a glossy finish.
I stamped the image with the green ink.  I colored the flowers with watercolor and a waterbrush.  After that dried I sponged the entire surface with Versamark Watermark ink and heat embossed with clear embossing powder.  I did this twice to give it a clear coat which added a lovely sheen to the front of the card.

For each card I chose a different sentiment on the inside and added a touch of the flowers in the corners as well.

After I finished my watercolors, I decided to use the Flower Shop stamp in a few different ways.

Stampers Anonymous Flower Shop For The Funkie Junkie Boutique

I inked up the stamp with the yellow ink and then dabbed the edges of the stamp with the tan ink.

I stamped the roses with this inking in two spots and then added the sentiment stamped in the tan color.  I layered the card and added a touch of the rustic with twine and a kraft card base.

I then decided to stamp the Flower Shop flowers on layers of a card.

I used a pink and yellow and stamped the mage on three layers of the card.  The nice thing about all of these cards is they can be put in a regular envelop and sent without fear of ruining the effect.  I would wrap the charms in tissue to protect them.

For my final card I decided to create a kraft and white card.

I stamped the flowers on the kraft cardstock with Versamark Watermark ink.  I then heat embossed the flowers using the white embossing powder.

I tied the white ribbon across the front and accented with a white flower.

I then stamped the Mr. & Mrs following the same process as the top.  The stamped kraft cardstock was taped to the card base.

With This Ring

Hi! Suzz here with our latest challenge! I am challenging you to celebrate the weddings that we traditionally see during the summer months. Here is the challenge description:

"Summer is a traditional time for weddings. This year we have seen many of the celebrations become virtual, rescheduled or limited to few people participating. We as craft makers can still share our art with the happy couples by creating something beautiful to celebrate their special occasion. I challenge you to create something celebrating a wedding, it can be anything including: layout, card, decor, or gift."

The winner will earn a chance to be a Guest Designer at a future date here at The Funkie Junkie Boutique, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. There are also Top 3 Badges for three additional outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team.

The guidelines for entering are simple; create a new vintage or shabby chic project following the challenge theme, link it below to your post (not just your blog) and also include a link back to this challenge in your post. You can combine our challenge with up to 10 challenges (including this one) to be in with a chance of winning. If you are entering through a public forum (such as Instagram) you'll need to include the words 'Funkie Junkie Boutique Challenge'. Also, please be sure to turn off your Word Verification so our Design Team can leave comments on your blogs. Saturday Showcase - Seth Apter Izink ICE and Pigment Inks by Aladine

Hi everyone and welcome to another Saturday Showcase, the Design Team's chance to share tutorials and products available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique with you. This time the focus falls on Seth Apter's Izink ICE and Pigment Inks by Aladine which can be purchased individually or handily in bundles.

Having recently obtained a set each of the Izink ICE gels and Pigment Inks I am having a lot of fun experimenting with them. Today I'm sharing a tutorial for creating four different 'backgrounds' that were made on A5 sized pieces of mixed media card (that's roughly 8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches in the US).

On the first piece of card I applied Whiskey Frost Izink ICE through the Finnabair Prima 'Floral Net' stencil - I found using an old membership card worked well to do this. Allowing the ICE to air dry seems to work better than using a heat tool which can make the surface bubble a little.

On the second piece of card I spread more of the 'Whiskey Frost' ICE using a spatula this time, pulling away from the surface to create an uneven textured finish. Again I allowed this to air dry.

On the third piece of card I spread a thick layer of 'Cheddar' Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint. This can be dried with a heat tool but to be honest it dries that quickly anyway you probably won't need to.

I applied the same paint through another Finnabair Prima stencil, this time 'Oriental Wall', onto the fourth piece of card.

For the next stage I applied a little of the 'Whiskey Frost' Izink ICE onto the surface of the two painted backgrounds and some of the 'Cheddar' Paint onto the two ICE'd backgrounds.

From here on in I used the same Izink Pigment Inks onto all four backgrounds. To intensify the orange colour I added 'Roast Chestnut' Pigment Ink in patches to them. The method I've found best for this is to add a little to one area with the brush in the bottle, spread it around in lots of directions with a spatula and move on to the next area. Spreading with a spatula is not so easy on a more dimensional surface like the 'Floral Net' stencilled one so I opted for an old paint brush which was equally effective.

The next colour added in areas was 'Raspberry Beret' Pigment Ink. If you choose three places on each background and move out from those with each additional layer it seems to work well.

With all that warm colour I decided to contrast it with some 'Avalanche' Pigment Ink; yes, it is possible to layer white over all those darker shades! I also applied it through the 'Vintage Wallpaper' Finnabair Prima stencil using a small piece of sponge to dab the ink through the gaps.

With lighter areas now created I was able to add some other paler Pigment Ink shades,'Stratosphere' and 'Cotton Candy' (a favourite shade). I love how all these different ink colours layer beautifully over each other. It's key to allow each layer to dry before the next is applied but since the ink is so fast drying you don't even need a heat tool to help with this.

So now I had four backgrounds with subtle differences that needed enhancing individually. I started with the 'Floral Net' stencilled one, laying the stencil back over the existing pattern and applying a mix of 'Royal Gold' and 'Avalanche' Pigment Inks over the raised areas.

Next I tackled the piece which began with the 'Oriental Wall' stencilling. I'd made sure some of it remained visible as each of the ink layers were applied. Now it was time to re-enhance this by replacing the stencil over the card, applying a little 'Whiskey Frost' ICE with a sponge, then following it with some 'Avalanche' and 'Stratosphere' Pigment Inks.

Now for the piece that started with lots of 'Cheddar' paint and a little 'Whiskey Frost' over the top. With no real pattern to this one I went for 'Avalanche' and 'Royal Gold' Pigment Inks through the 'Vintage Wallpaper' stencil.

The final piece of card was the one more heavily textured with the 'Whiskey Frost' ICE. The paler inks had already started to highlight the texture and I enhanced this, first by warming up the colour with some more 'Whiskey Frost' ICE on a sponge and then with 'Avalanche' Pigment Ink. I splattered the 'Royal Gold' Pigment Ink over the top to finish.

Here are the four completed pieces, all with the same colour palette but each one with a different look. Click on the image to see them more closely;

I used a couple of the pieces to create collage style cards. The first one has a Tim Holtz 'Large Stems' flower embossed with Pam Bray's 'Peppermint' Rock Candy Embossing Powder by Emerald Creek Crafts. There's a lot of inbuilt texture and shine in this powder which was further highlighted by a little 'Gilt' Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint. The scrap of fabric was also dyed with the Pigment Inks (as shown in a previous tutorial HERE) and I used a little of the 'Stratosphere' and 'Royal Gold' Pigment Inks to enhance the smaller strip of paper. The words come from Wendy Vecchi's Studio 490 stamp set 'Funky Flower Art'.

The second card was created in a similar way to the first with the Tim Holtz 'Large Stems' flower covered in a layer of 'Royal Gold' Pigment Ink before being embossed with Pam Bray's 'Butterscotch' Rock Candy Embossing Powder - this shade of the powder has more of a translucent look so needed a boost of complimentary colour underneath. The piece of 'lace' underneath the flower was cut from card painted with 'Heather' Dina Wakley Media Paint and had a dash of the 'Royal Gold' Pigment Ink added to it to make it shimmer. Again the words came from Wendy Vecchi's 'Funky Flower Art' set.

Thanks for visiting to catch today's Saturday Showcase tutorial - I hope you've enjoyed seeing some ideas for using Seth Apter's Izink ICE and Pigment Inks.

There's still time to enter the current Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog challenge 'Christmas Cards in July' to be in with the chance of being a Guest Designer here. We look forward to seeing your amazing creations.

Guest Designer - Amelia Breytenbach

Say hello to our Guest Designer for the Christmas Cards in July challenge.  Amelia Breytenbach was the winner of the Tickled Pink challenge and can be found at her blog, Stamped for the Occasion where she brings us some lovely fresh inspiration for the challenge.

Hello, my name is Amelia. I am so delighted to feature in the guest designer post on The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog – it is such an honour. I live with my husband and 2 cats in Pretoria, South Africa. I am a librarian at a large residential university for the past 40 years now, but when I am at home I keep myself busy with card making. Since blogging and participating in card challenges,I met so many wonderful friends around the world who are sharing my passion.

I would describe my style as a mixture of shabby, vintage and sometimes cute elements. I like experimenting with new crafting tools and products and using the older stash with new products is very challenging for me. I started my blog, "Stamped for the Occasion", in February 2010 and since then love to share my card making passion with the world. For the challenge “Christmas in July” I decided to make a shabby card in non-traditional Christmas colours.

I added two layers of designer paper to the base card to create depth. The different layers were distressed with a distress tool and then aged with distress ink for a shabby vintage look.

I chose a lovely deer die cut as my focal point and decorated it with a wreath, a tiny bow and rose bud. For dimension I lifted the deer from the base card with mirror tape.

To add some texture I used a strip of vintage lace to the bottom and a string of pearls to the top of the card. I covered a die cut music note border strip with gold texture paste and layered it on the lace. The finishing touches were a few pearls, leaves, flowers and wax cord bows.

I always like to decorate the inside of my cards as well with some of the elements featured on the outside. For this card I repeat the music note border, leaves and pearls at the bottom of the card inside.

You can find more pictures and project details of the card on my blog. Thank you for asking me to join the “Christmas in July” challenge as the featured guest designer – your challenges always inspire me.

If you would like all the details about this gorgeous card, you must pop over to Amelia's blog to check it, and all her other wonderful creations, out. Once you have had a look, come on back and create a Christmas card to share with us. The challenge runs through 11:55 pm EDT on Tuesday, July 21st and can be found HERE so there is still time to enter.
