chunky chipboard elements, painting & crackle finishing…

Earlier this week, for my Frilly & Funky posting for the chipboard and metal challenge, I showed this little scene…

From a single die, I created a chunky, dimensional bird house…

I began by die cutting 8 repeats, from light weight chip board. The number of repeats is not essential, but it is handy to have more die cuts than you are likely to use to achieve the thickness you desire…

Use your favorite adhesive to glue one die cut carefully on top of another. It’s important to have them stack up carefully. I used glossy accents for this job…

Repeat this with as many layers as you need, to make it as thick as you like. I chose to clamp them all together with some small clamps I often use for paper creations. You can let it cure under a heavy book, just as well…

When the adhesive is dried, it’s time to paint a base coat of acrylic paint, in whatever color you desire. For the birdhouse used in monday’s post, I painted it white. This time, I used blue for the base..

Once the paint is dry, I brushed a medium thick layer of Distress Crackle Paint, in picket fence. It doesn’t need to be a careful coating. It’s best not to go over any areas you have already painted. The thinner the layer, the finer the crackle pattern. A thick layer will result in a larger crackle pattern…

By using a contrasting paint beneath the Distress Crackle Paint, the pattern shows through very distinctly. It’s really fun to play with color combinations of paint and crackle paint. The chipboard piece can be left as it is, or……

you can add another layer of color with distress ink. I find a finger dauber works well…

The possibilities are endless and can be adjusted for any creation you have in mind. This little house may just get some antiquing around the edges.. I’ll use this technique in some different ways down the road.
