Lyla's Frozen Winter Journal

Let's Get Cozy!
We're kicking off a new theme for the Design Team for the next two weeks.  It's "Frozen Winter" at The Funkie Junkie Boutique's Inspiration Ave and that seems appropriate for this time of year - even for those of us who don't have any snow or ice - simply because the month of January is the very middle of winter itself. While not everyone is going to see freezing temperatures, I'm pretty sure that the word "chilly" has been known to just about everyone in the US, except for the extreme southern areas this year. Anything after December 21st counts and Christmas certainly was a doozy!
I solved my Frozen-Winter-theme/warmer-weather-area problem by choosing a paper pack that would give me colors that could go both ways. Come along with me and see how it came about!

This is what some of those Funkie Junkie Boutique goodies were set aside for!

My tools are all shown in the photos but the main items you will need to create one of these Let's Get Cozy Albums is listed below:

Not used on this project, but clearly matches perfectly:

For the Eileen Hull Scoreboards Plus Dies, you will need to use the Big Shot Plus, or equivalent machine from Sizzix. Also the cutting plates for the Big Shot Plus.

I have stacks of plain colored cardstock here in the Florida home, and these two shades of light grey worked for me for a base.

I've given you the dimensions and number of cuts. I didn't use 2 envelope edges (each color), but I did use everything else.

Now- check out these awesome shades of red and blue with white & cream!

And there's plenty there that could be used for summer projects...or a Florida winter!

I measured the cover for the Journal cut, and chose my fronts and backs to match.

Each of the following photos shows the sizes I cut. This was to be the Fronts and Backs for the covers.

This was to be 2 inside pages (1 for each album).

The above sheet (just a different pattern here but the same inside pages) cut again and then...

... each is folded in half to make two pages each.

I decided to make an inside notebook for the very middle of each album.

Here, I layered the cover sheets.  I decided not to use the Score Tape after all, since I like to have a hard spine and cover, so I chose to use Glossy Accents.

There are all 4 'sections' used on my middle fold- and fully flat.

I laid this out so you can see that the base pages are the exact size of the die, but the Graphic 45 papers are hand cut so they extend past the base. This allows that area to bend freely for the closure.

Here, I've moved the middle covering piece over to the left, so you can see it's nearly the same exact size.  Eileen's die is designed to easily be able to fit your papers - no matter how you cut!

Here: the outside is coming together. You can see I've got a nice hard, flat back spine in the middle.

After getting the envelope flap edges on, all I needed was the top layers.

Getting some stitching done on all the inside pages to make long side pockets for the large Journal Cards.

The cuts on this Frame Pocket Journal Die can be used different ways; a flat pocket or one with more room.

I didn't have the Sizzix Thinlits Dies - Library Pocket, ATC Card & Tabs by Eileen Hull that works with Eileen's Frame Pocket Journal die, so I got out one of my older Tim Holtz Thinlits Dies.

And did some plugged-into-the-electric-socket stitching...

...and some stitching with no electricity- the notebook was a bit thick.  By stitching it to a matching spine piece, it was easy to sew all the pages to that and then glue it inside.

Here, I am 'stitching' with ribbon. Getting the other 2 sets of inside pages sewn onto that middle piece. Buttons would form the closure - along with velcro pieces.

This is the backside of all three signatures sewn to the middle piece.  I even tied another set of ribbons to the top in order to have a couple of hanging outside the spine for Idea-oogy Snowflakes.

Choosing some TH Idea-ology...

The only color I used for any edging or shading. I know! Who kidnapped me and replaced me?!?  This was just one project that looked right without.

And this is what it came to be...

And some element closeups:

And another VIDEO!

And that's a wrap... for today! Don't forget to pop back in for MORE here at TFJB Inspiration Ave from the rest of the fabulous Design Team!! We've got more FROZEN WINTER yet to come, so why not cozy up with us and join us for the fun!

Celebrating the New Celebrate Colorize Dies!

Happy New Year!  Welcome back!  Suzz here and today I am sharing from the newest Sizzix Tim Holtz Release.  I picked the fun Celebrate Colorize dies.  I am always in need of birthday cards and these dies are perfect for celebrating!

I wanted to use balloons using text based inspiration!  I pulled out my old torn up dictionary and looked up a few different pages with definitions from celebrations and birthday to cut out my layered balloons.

I had fun pairing them with some accessories in a shimmery yellow.  The background was created using the layering stencil with a mix of the same ranger die inks used on the balloons.

I cut out additional balloons and tried different effects with them with stamping and sponging on inks.

I also tried various backgrounds to highlight the balloons.  First there was a general misting of the shimmery yellow mica stain spray.

Next was a series of numbers stamped across the background using versamark on white cardstock.

Then the numbers were embossed with clear embossing powder.  Yellow mica stain spray was spritzed across the entire surface.  After the spray dried brown dye ink was sponged across the surface to highlight the numbers.  Tiny text from a stamp was stamped over the surface.  To finish off the effect a dry buff of the background was done to remove any excess ink on the embossed numbers.

The next background used a stencil to add some texture.

The background was embossed with distress paste and a stencil.  After it dried the background was spritzed with mica stain over the entire surface.  After the spray dried then brown dye ink was sponged around and over the raised background.  Then a script was stamped using the same brown ink over the surface.  To finish the background a splattering of brown and yellow sprays were splashed across the background.

Hope this has inspired you!

Amazing Journal Inspiration With New Sizzix Dies

Hello, Lisa Hoel here. The new Sizzix dies have been released and it's an exciting collection! The Funkie Junkie Boutique has all the new products from both Tim Holtz and Eileen Hull. I got busy and created a rather involved (= this post is long so get comfy) jungle themed junk journal!

The base of the journal is created using Eileen Hull's new Frame Pocket Journal Scoreboards Plus Die. (A plus die is an oversize die that won't fit into a regular Big Shot machine. You will need a Big Shot Plus, Sizzix Switch or other comparable wide mouth machine.)

The journal can be created with or without the flap (but I think it adds a nice touch).

There is a pocket part on the die that you can cut out of matboard to create a rigid tag pocket as shown above. You can also cut it out of cardstock and use in the pages (shown later). If you don't include the pocket, you can fit more signatures in your journal. I made two signatures, thinking the pocket would take up the space of the third signature. I added so many inclusions to my pages however, the signatures became way too thick! I could only fit one signature into my journal. Oops! I made the extra signature its own little companion book. I couldn't let all that work go to waste. Plus you can learn from me. ;-)

Now for LOTS of detail photos! There are also in progress photos to see how it all went together.

Scroll all the way to the end for a supplies list.

The frame pocket holding the tag on the right page is part of
the Frame Pocket Journal Scoreboards Plus Die. Cut them out of
paper or cardstock and sprinkle throughout your journal.

My "extra" signature as its own little book. I was so sad when I realized they were too bulky to both fit in the main journal. Oh well, this works!

I cut a tag out of a piece of Black Two-tone Woodgrain Cardstock and then
used the Tile Alphanumeric Thinlits Die to cut the letters out.

How-to:

1) Embossing with the Tablecloth 3-D Textured Impressions Embossing Folder. I had some pre-inked cardstock in my stash so I grabbed that to use. (Having a stash is a time saver!) One of my favorite techniques to use with the 3-D folders is to ink it with archival ink and then emboss my paper. The ink is transferred into the debossed areas and really makes the detail pop.

I also used a brayer to lightly add paint to the tops of the embossed areas.

2) Journal parts and assembly.

The Frame Pocket Journal Die

I did all my inking and stamping before assembling the parts.

You can use strong dry adhesive like red line tape to assemble the
cover, but I prefer to use a strong wet adhesive.

3) A look at some of the elements I used on the pages:

The Library Pocket, ATC Card & Tabs Thinlits Die Set in action!

I embossed the paper with Dotted first and then cut the envelope.

The tag pocket cut from cardstock and some of the frame pockets.

I decorated all the pages first and then stitched the signatures together.

I made a charm cluster for the closure using
Prima Marketing Mechanicals - Rusty Monstera and a
broken necklace I had in my stash.

Thanks for stopping by. If you hung in there for the whole post you're a rock star! Keep an eye here on the Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog, Inspiration Ave. because you are now getting regular doses of expanded (and inspiring) content each week. Don't miss it…
