A Shabby Layered Tag Tutorial

Hello and welcome! It's Nancy here and I'm excited to be presenting the Saturday Step by Step this week. Today I have a layered, shabby tag tutorial to share with you.  

I started out by die cutting a Tim Holtz large tag from grunge board and Prima Cartographer paper. I also die cut a large Tim Holtz Movers and Shapers oval from grunge board and Cartographer paper, along with a smaller oval in Prima's Cartographer.  

I hand crafted two large roses and painted some additional flowers from my stash to coordinate with my color scheme. You can find a tutorial for the roses HERE. I also die cut several leaves from Maja Vintage Summer Basics paper. 

For my layers I cut 3 pieces of Prima Stationer's Desk paper. The larger size is 5 1/2 by 3 1/4 inches.The two smaller pieces are 5 by 3 1/4 inches. After cutting my papers I distressed all the edges with a Tim Holtz distress tool. 

I misted the two smaller pieces with water and crinkled them a bit, setting them aside to dry. 

I used the grunge board as the base for my tag, covering it in a neutral design paper. 

I applied the larger strip of patterned paper over the first layer. 

Next I staggered my smaller, crinkled layers and adhered them to the tag.   

I covered the large grunge board oval with design paper then centered my small oval with the stamped sentiment onto it.  

Next I adhered my finished oval about half way onto the tag. 

I added an eyelet die cut that is part of the Tim Holtz large tag set.  

Now for the fun part! Arrange your flowers and leaves until you are pleased with the lay out.  

Finally I added a jute string bow and topper, and a couple more leaves.

Welcome to today's Guest Designer, Terry!

Today we are welcoming Terry of Terry's Work in Progress, as our Guest Designer. Terry was chosen by the DT as the winner of the 'Just CASE It!' challenge. Let's find out more about Terry and the beautiful project she has created for this fortnight's challenge.

Since becoming an active blogger in 2010 I have had the privilege to be on several Design Teams including being right here with Frilly and Funkie. I have learned that this hobby constantly evolves and opens ups so many doors for creative expression and opportunities. The artistic world is so generous in sharing knowledge and inspiring all of us to move forward and enjoy the journey! I am honored to have been asked to be a Guest Designer with my friends at Frilly and Funkie.

Living in the desert, the "Cool Water" challenge theme was just what I needed to bring down the temperature! I decided to use the Boardwalk Stamps from Artistic Outpost, which were stamped with Archival Watering Can and Black, colored with Distress and also a little water-coloring. The tag background was masked off in areas to create a land "cool water" effect and then the sky in lighter shades of blue with many flicked water drops! I added a few seashells and dyed cheesecloth to finish.

I'm sure you will agree that Terry's project is superb and will have given you lots more inspiration for the current challenge 'Cool Water...'. Friday Focus - Distress Glitters

Hi everyone. Jenny here with your Friday Focus here at Frilly and Funkie. This fortnight it's the turn of Distress Glitters to have an extra 15% discount applied at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

I decided to show you that they are not just for Christmas by creating a summery and very feminine card (you can click on the photos to see each of them in more detail).

It started with an Archival Reinker background using Cornflower Blue, a touch of Fern Green and some Surgical Spirits/Rubbing Alcohol on Specialty Stamping Paper. The great thing about these backgrounds is that no two are ever the same and they are quick to make.

Next, the stencilling. I wanted a contrasting pattern inside an oval so made my own stencil by using the largest of the Movers and Shapers oval dies through some of the acetate packaging. Using both parts I applied three flavours of Distress Ink and some Brushed Pewter Distress Paint through several Studio 490 Wendy Vecchi stencils.

Now for the Distress Glitter. I added Translucent Embossing Paste through the Vintage Floral stencil, then poured small amounts of glitter over the different areas with a little spoon. I mixed my own colour for the flowers using the Antique Linen and Victorian Velvet versions.

Once the paste had dried I ran a white gel pen around the internal stencilled lines of the flowers and larger leaves to add extra definition. The finishing touches included stamping the sentiment from the Heirloom Art stamp set, and flicking splatters of Brushed Pewter Distress Paint over the whole card.

Don't you just love the way the Translucent Paste grabs the Distress Glitter? And the great thing is it will work through any of your stencils. Welcome to today's Guest Designer, Katy!

Today we welcome back Katy of 'Postcards from the Attic', chosen as the Design Team's winner of the 'For All Our Fathers' challenge. Let's find out more about Katy and see her fantastic project...

I’ve been papercrafting for about nine years now and my love for it (and ability to shop for stash!) doesn’t diminish. I am totally nuts about stamping and my fave all time product is Distress Inks – I use them on almost everything. I live in the Midlands with my beloved mutt and hubbie. I love making 3D items (it’s rare I create a card) so I stayed in my comfort zone here with a canvas. I do what I do simply for love - crafting makes me happy!

First off I feel I should confess that this is my third attempt at this challenge – mojo was obviously having an off day. I think I was trying to go too orange initially – I am much happier with the accent summer shades in this make. I wanted my colours bold and strong – as they appear in summer sun – and so I had a play with my Inktense Blocks. I used them straight from the box like a palette to create these intense, vivid flowers.

I combined my love of stamping with my newest crafty venture – jewellery making – and created wire stems and tendrils for my flowers. I love the texture this gives my canvas. I decided to have my stamped panel overhang the canvas top and bottom for a more asymmetrical look and backed it with grey patterned paper so the blues and oranges could pop. The flowers and bottle are adhered with silicone glue to make them lovely and 3D.
